A first-person account (Scott Empringham) describing a pivotal 2003 opportunity to join Strata Properties in Newport. Though the brokerage had limited space and offered no chair (he was asked to work from home), the speaker was accepted based on perceived hunger and responsibility; the person who offered the opportunity became a long-term mentor. Themes: mentorship, perseverance, and early real-estate hustle (door-knocking).

There was a moment when I was given the opportunity to join a brokerage that I didn't think would allow me, and it was called Strata Properties here in Newport, and it was back in 2003, and they were the brokerage. If you could get a chair there, you were on the A team, and it would be like playing University of Alabama, University of Alabama. Recently, I was afforded that opportunity. And it's funny, I just had lunch and spent some time with the guy that gave me that opportunity. I still close contact, and he's like a mentor to me. And that was a moment where, it's funny, he confided in me afterwards. He said, you know, you were classic candidate because we knew you were hungry, you owned a home, you were married, and you had a child. And I let him know that I was going to have to go out and knock doors, and that's something I had to do. So that was probably a very clear moment when he said, okay, you know, we'd love to have you. I didn't even get a chair. He said, you're going to have to work from your house. We don't even have space for you. But I see something in you, and I think you're going to be somebody in this industry if you do what you say you're going to do. So that's probably one.
