As a manager, you might hit every target but still lose your team. Some managers are technically outstanding, smart, driven, results-focused, absolutely committed to achieving the goals that their own manager has set. But if team members feel ignored, unsupported, dismissed, or even invisible sometimes, the wheels come off— engagement, commitment, motivation, performance, and the results achieved. And they tend to stay off. Here's a management tip: Check in on people, not just progress. Say, "I only want you to agree to this timescale if it is achievable." And listen. Ask, "What support or input would you like or welcome from me as we start this project or task?" Or, "How are you doing with this task? Really, how are you doing?" And also, if you anticipate there are too many plates spinning, "I trust you'll tell me and tell me early so we can plan some alternative options." Remember, performance is powered by humans and they deserve as much attention as the task that you're trusting. Yourself and them to deliver.
