Men face contradictory demands: the old code wants stoicism and strength, the new code wants vulnerability and emotional openness. Whichever a man shows gets punished by the other, leaving him trapped between two impossible standards.

Men face contradictory demands: the old code wants stoicism and strength, the new code wants vulnerability and emotional openness. Whichever a man shows gets punished by the other, leaving him trapped between two impossible standards.
So here's how the game's rigged. Here's the pattern. You've got two sets of expectations sitting on your shoulders. One is the old school set. It's the one that says, hey, be strong. Don't crack. Provide. Don't complain. Protect. Fix. Lead. Set two is the new school. And it says, hey man, be vulnerable. Share your feelings. Be gentle. Collaborate. No, step back. Now, on paper, they both sound fine. In real life, they collide. Old school says, hey, men don't cry. New school says, why won't you ever cry? Old school says, handle your problems, while new school tells you, why didn't you ask for help? You're not being invited to choose who you are and live that set of rules. You're being told, be both all the time. Perfectly. And I reserve the right, by the way, to punish you whichever one you show me in this moment.
