Can cannabis help you with your post traumatic stress disorder? I'm Sherry Caplan Stalino, founder of Connected Wellness. So, for those of you who are unfamiliar with post traumatic stress disorder, originally the diagnosis was created based on military personnel and when they came back from combat and the intrusive thoughts and images and nightmares that they would go through. But did you also know that post traumatic stress disorder can help happen for people who have complex trauma where they experience day after day physical abuse, sexual abuse, sexual assault, or they've lived with somebody with a life challenging illness, or they have a sibling with a mental illness or a child who has an extreme mental illness or a disorder. It can also happen if you experience, like a sudden death, the family or from somebody that was very unexpected. Also, first responders tend to have a lot of post traumatic stress disorder because they're often called to task to see events that are very traumatizing or terrorist activity. So how can cannabis help with post traumatic stress disorder? Well, we know that the endocannabinoid system helps to regulate your appetite and immune activity, your immune system, your sleep, as well as memory formation. So when you use different types of cannabis, you can actually help the body to sort through some of the traumatic memories as well as help the body to rest and decrease anxiety. So let's talk about what forms of cannabis different clinicians are using and for what reasons. So, so remember, you want to bring this information back to your physicians and ask them what is best for you. So Rafael Mechoulam, who, if you don't know, is the grandfather of cannabis medicine, discovered THC and his team of experts discovered the endocannabinoid system. They believed initially when they started working with cannabis, that THC is very beneficial for people, especially in the evening time, because it helps the body to rest, to decrease anxiety, as well as helping with the intrusive thoughts and the memories that can come at night while you're sleeping. So it can be very helpful with night terrors. So what do you do when you need to be grounded during the daytime? Well, during the daytime, having different cannabis formulations that are higher in CBD and lower in thc, along with formations that have CBDA and thca, can be very helpful in regulating the body and decreasing anxiety. So those are the two ways that cannabis can be helpful with post traumatic stress disorder. And so taking something high in THC in the evening time to help with sleeping and rest, getting the body to be in a more restful state and calming anxiety. And. And during the daytime, talking to your physicians about higher dosages of CBD and using CBDA and THCA to help regulate the body and decrease anxiety and keep you feeling more grounded during the day seems to be more helpful. Now let me add one other thing here. So as you know, I have been a mental health clinician for over 25 years and I've worked with many people who have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. There is neuroscience research that is out there that is showing how there are various different types of skills and tools that when you have Post Traumatic Stress disorder and you are trying to overcome it, that if you build in a life plan including good nutrition for the brain and body, including mindfulness meditation, different forms of exercise like yoga and martial arts, music and movement, being able to connect with your body and yourself in this present moment, engaging your spiritual beliefs to help you overcome some of the symptoms that come up, all of these modalities of treatment put together are very helpful in helping you reclaim your life and moving on past your Post Traumatic Stress disorder.
