Shari B. Kaplan explains how willingness to release negative beliefs, without needing to know how, unlocks your brain's ability to accept therapy. Aligning with something larger than yourself—nature, God, a higher self—and asking for help strengthens that willingness and makes healing strategies actually work.

If you want to release a negative belief and you don't know how yet, but you're just willing to. If you have a spiritual belief that you are connected to nature, the sun, God, whatever your belief is, asking for help, it's asking for attunement so that you can align with the higher, wiser parts of yourself. And we're trying to say, I'm willing to release this negative thought and I'm willing to be at peace instead. The key is you don't need to know how, you need to be willing. Then whatever interventions that you're working on in therapy or on your own have a greater likelihood for your brain to be able to follow through on those solutions so that you are able to accomplish the mental health goals that you're setting out for yourself. I hope that's helpful.
