The Endocannabinoid System

Shari Caplan explains how your body makes its own cannabinoids to regulate sleep, appetite, memory, and stress. When this system breaks down, medical cannabis can restore balance, but you need a doctor who knows cannabis well enough to discuss strains and drug interactions.
Hello and welcome back to our channel. I'm Shari Caplan. I'm the founder of Connected Wellness, and I've been an integrative mental health clinician for over 25 years. First, let me share with you that in our bodies we have an endocannabinoid system, endo, meaning inside cannabinoids, meaning we produce our own compounds that are called cannabinoids that are also found in cannabis, like THC and CBD, just to name two of over 100 cannabinoids and more. So I want to share with you what the endocannabinoid system does. It helps to regulate your sleep, your appetite, your ability to organize memories, some of which you need on a daily basis, and some you actually need to be filed away and not remember. It also helps to protect your body. So eating, sleeping, memory forming, relaxing, regulating and protecting. And that is what your endocannabinoid system does. And when your endocannabinoid system is not working effectively and efficiently, adding medical cannabis to your body can help get it to its optimal state of well being. So what do you need to know about cannabis to help your endocannabinoid system? Well, first and foremost, I'd say you need a good physician who can offer you guidance. But if you already have physician, you want to ask a few questions to make sure that they're serving you to your highest good. One is, how long have they been practicing with cannabis medicine and are they up on the latest dosages for the symptoms from different illnesses? Number two is who did they train under? And are they confident and comfortable knowing about the different cannabinoids and the different strains that are out there and available to you? And the fourth question that I would want to know is, do you have a physician who truly cares and will take the time that when you start dosing the medicine that you can reach out to them and make sure that if you have other medicines in your body, other medications that you're taking, that you have a physician who knows how to work with the plant extracts along with your current medications, whether you're trying to get off of them or whether you're trying to balance your body along with those medications. The next thing that I'd like to discuss with you is how you can educate yourself on the different types of plants that are out there for your illness. And one of the ways that I would like you to really start learning about the different cannabinoids in the plants is to stay tuned with us because we will be sharing with you video after video about different cannabinoids, different plants, different types of cannabis plants and where to go find them so that you can get the best medicine for you or your loved ones. I hope that's helpful information and that you'll stay tuned and join us for our next episode.
