Episode 063 - How To Use Instagram To Increase Sales

In this solo episode of the Content Amplification series, Shaun Whynacht explains how to turn an Instagram account into a sales‑generating engine without treating the platform as a direct selling channel. He begins by urging listeners to abandon the mindset of using Instagram solely to push products, emphasizing instead the importance of providing genuine value and building relationships. He outlines how to use Reels to reach new audiences and position the account’s purpose (e.g., education, industry insights) through consistent branding. He then details how Stories, with stickers, polls, questions, and direct‑message follow‑ups, can foster engagement, collect feedback, and funnel interested followers to lead magnets or websites. Shaun stresses that organic posts should focus on awareness and trust, not hard‑sell copy, and that any paid ads should be retargeting to people who have already interacted with the brand. He advises creators to explore competitor accounts for ideas, become comfortable with Instagram’s features, and later transition the same tactics to TikTok. The episode concludes with a call to experiment, have fun, and use Instagram as a relationship‑building platform that ultimately feeds a sales funnel.
Chapters
Not once do I go at it thinking this is an account where I'm going to use it to sell. No, we want to genuinely help people, and that's the type of content that we want to put out. Sometimes there's humor in there, sometimes it's a photo, but more so it's about giving value back. Hey, hey, hey, welcome to this episode. We're gonna be talking about Instagram and more importantly, how do you increase your sales on Instagram? Now I have done a lot of listening to other podcasts, other experts, and what I try to do in this show, the Content Amplification episode, is to bring my knowledge of what I know at this current time to the different topics that we have in here. So I'm flying solo in this episode, Jodi's not with me. So it's kind of a monologue. So let's have a conversation together. Let's break it down. You want to increase your sales and you have an Instagram account. How do you do that? Well, the first thing to realize is don't go at it with an approach to try to sell. I mean, that's going to be your biggest mistake. If you leverage the content you put out there to say, okay, this content is made to sell, it's made to get people to buy, you're going to fall flat on your face. You're going to embarrass yourself. You're going to actually probably hurt your brand overall. So how do you do it? How do you use this platform? And Instagram has come out recently and said that they are no longer a photography app. There's a lot more features to Instagram. People are using video a lot more. You've got stories, you've got Reels, you've got all that different content that's out there. How you do this is you need to start to build a relationship using Reels. Now, when you look at Reels, short video clips that are out there, and you start to scroll through, you're gonna see a lot of people doing dance routines and lip syncing and all that kind of stuff. And I promise you, you don't have to do that. What you need to understand is what is the purpose of your account? Now, don't think the purpose of your account is for you to grow your business. That's not what I mean. What I mean is what is the place in the followers' lives that you want your account to hold. In our case, as a marketing company, we want to educate. We want to pass along valuable information that's going to help people grow their business, help people be more effective and more productive in their days. Okay, not once do I go at it thinking this is an account where I'm going to use it to sell. No, we want to genuinely help people, and that's the type of content that we want to put out. Sometimes there's humor in there, sometimes it's a photo, but more so it's about giving value back. So think about that in your business. What kind of value can you position your account to be? And start to look at Reels, because people are loving that video content, as a way to just reach new people. And for people to start to get introduced to who you are. Now, if you're okay with doing those videos, hey, maybe, you know, make sure there's some branding in there. Have a shirt or something on when you're doing it, just so they can not only expect that that's what you are, is somebody who just does dance videos, but the fact that you're maybe a marketer, or you are a realtor, or you are a, um, you know, an engineer, but you're an engineer doing that type of video. And the reason for that is they're gonna start to get exposed to who you are. And then you can bring in your stories. Now your stories are for the people who start to follow you. And if you're like anyone else, watching stories, which that's the top part of the account where you scroll to the right, it takes over the full screen of the phone. So it's a fully immersive experience versus like the feed, which you're scrolling vertically and you're just getting a small little piece of it. But that's where you can start to engage with people. You can start to put things in there like stickers and questions and polls, and you get people to actually engage with the account by actually clicking on those on the screen. Think of it as small little bites of information to help. You're not going to sell a product on Instagram unless you're running ads, through your organic feed, what you're going to do is you're going to build a relationship. You're going to build interest. You're going to build awareness. You're going to build engagement. And if you start to follow someone because they have a really great presence, they're giving you some really valuable information, you're naturally going to be curious enough to start to look at them a bit more. Maybe you're going to Google their name. You might go to their profile, where their profile will have a link to their website. And that's where you're going to start to get into the, the habit of, of getting into their sales funnel is when you do that. Right? You're not going to go on there and you're not going to make an Instagram story. It's like, hey, you know what, come and buy our course on XYZ for $97. No, you're not going to do that. You're going to be like, here's some great information about this topic. Try this in your life, try that. You know what, and if you want more, follow my stories. I'm gonna give you some more tips every single week on this topic. That's where you're building that engagement. You're like, wow, this person's really giving me some good value. Who are they? Let's click on the name, let's go to their profile. They got a website, let's go there. Maybe there's a lead magnet on there. Boom, now you're into their sales funnel. So think of your Instagram account as a way to warm up that audience and find new people into your ecosystem. Like I said when we started, forget about going at it as a sales tool. It's not going to work. And Instagram is coming a long way with the engagement elements, making stories, having all those little options to put in the stickers, the yes/no, the question boxes, which are huge. Because what you can actually do is you could do a story on there and say, hey, you know what, I've got a great free resource on this, would you like it? If you so, if you would like, click yes on the button on the screen. They click yes, then you can go back to that story and see all those people who had said yes by scrolling up on the story, click on them, and then you can send them a direct message with a link to that free resource. I bet you didn't know you could do that. These features are available in Instagram. How about asking a question? Do you have a question like what's the biggest challenge you have with XYZ, whatever it is in your industry? And it's an open text box. People can type in there and write that in and you can see those answers come in. Now if they are somebody who is already following you, then you'll see who it is. So you can see all that information coming in and that's great information for you to start to generate new content based off of that feedback. So it's not no longer a, or it is no longer a one-way monologue. It's a dialogue you're starting to create. You can use these platforms to start to engage back and forth in conversation. You know, you can share out comments now that are showing up on there. So take a look at your Instagram. Open the account up, start to play with some of the features, and start to get familiar with it. I guarantee you're going to find it very user-friendly to do that. And if you're still not sure of exactly what to do, start to look at some other accounts and what other people in your industry are doing. Find your competition, you know, find a similar— more so, I guess, probably find a similar business in a different area that is not your competition but very similar to what you're doing and start to follow their accounts because you could start to engage with them as well. And it doesn't seem like a threat. You can start to see how they are using those social channels that are there. So the final wrap-up of this when it comes to thinking about how do you increase your sales using Instagram, you do it by starting to build the relationships there. You don't sell. And if you're starting to run ads using Facebook Ads Manager and you're starting to push it out to Instagram, again, you could have an offer there for a product or so forth, but I strongly recommend that is not cold targeted towards an audience that has no idea who you are. You're just going to be wasting money. Make sure it's a retargeted audience based off of recent engagement from from something else because they're already then aware of who you are and you can place that in front of them a lot easier. So have fun creating content on Instagram. And once you get that under your belt, it's an easy transition over to TikTok, which we're going to be talking about in an upcoming episode. Thanks for listening and have a great time growing your business.
