Facebook Live - What You Need To Know

In this tutorial, Shaun Whynacht—founder and CEO of Blue Cow Creative and a veteran video‑production marketer—explains why Facebook Live is a crucial tool for modern marketers and walks viewers through a live broadcast using the Facebook Pages app. He begins by framing a "marketing mindset shift" that moves businesses from trying to pull audiences to them, emphasizing that most target audiences now reside on Facebook. Shaun then demonstrates how to start a live video, describing the UI elements (Live button, camera, filters, drawing pen) and showing how to flip cameras, apply filters, and annotate the stream. He highlights practical use‑case ideas such as contractors showcasing work or sports commentary. After ending the broadcast, he explains how the video is saved to the page, how to access viewer metrics, and options for saving to the device. Finally, he offers production tips—use Wi‑Fi, minimize background movement, and stabilize the device—to ensure high‑quality streams. The video concludes with a call‑to‑action to follow Blue Cow Creative on Facebook.

Hey, let's talk about Facebook Live and what you need to know. But before we get started, if you don't know who I am, my name is Shaun Whynacht. I'm the founder and CEO of a company called Blue Cow Creative. We're located in the East Coast of Canada, Nova Scotia to be specific. And for over 15 years, I've been in the marketing field working with a large group of small business clients as well as larger corporate clients and government clients to help them market their message. My background is in professional video production, coming from a live TV background and then kind of transitioning into the whole video production and video marketing side of things. I'm content marketing certified, and most importantly, pretty much every day I'm on Facebook working for clients, whether it's promoting the services that we do or helping clients get their message out. So when it comes to talking to you about Facebook Live and what it could mean to you, I feel that I've got a good grasp of being able to deliver this message. So what exactly is Facebook Live? Well, before we get to that, I want to talk to you about something I call the marketing mindset shift. And this comes into play with not only Facebook but any kind of online digital marketing within the last several years, and it's going to be even more important as we move forward. So you see here on the screen, we've got You, the person on the left, the single soul person, and then you've got your audience represented on the right side. Now, the thing is, we are in the mindset that we have to spend a lot of money, we gotta put all our efforts to get these people to come to you, and that's whether they're coming to your website or coming to your talks or whatever it is, whether you're holding speeches, seminars, it doesn't matter what it is, but our mindset is we need to reach out to these people and get them to come to us. And that's where the problem lies, because we don't need to do that. It's much easier for you to go to them. And where exactly are they? Well, just think about it. They're on social media. And most importantly, right now, the majority of your audience is on Facebook. Facebook is one of the largest social media networks out there, and if you're not marketing using some sort of avenue with Facebook, you're really missing out in marketing your company, your brand, your business, or your organization. And it's really that simple. So when it comes to Facebook Live and when they rolled out this feature, and now it's available for everyone, not just businesses, this was a real game changer. Now Facebook Live is exactly what it is. It allows you to broadcast video live using Facebook, and it allows you to have engaging conversations with your followers. As you see here on the screen, we've got a little snapshot here and it shows some chats, we got some thumbs up, hearts, those kind of things, but you can broadcast live. It allows you to reach new audiences, and the reason this is extremely important right now is because Facebook Live is a new feature of Facebook. And Mark Zuckerberg went on the record to say that Facebook is giving far more bandwidth and more exposure to people using Facebook Live now than any other feature available on Facebook. So if you're okay with getting on camera, getting out there and promoting your message, go ahead and use Facebook Live. Now's the time. You're able to connect instantly, you're able to get your customers to engage with you and become followers to you with this new tool that's carried around in the palm of your hand. So what does it look like? Well, basically, if you look at this screenshot here, when you update your status, whether you're doing it personally or through your business, you're gonna see this little icon of a person with what looks like two rainbows around their head. That's the Live button. So what I want to do here is I want to go live here on my company page. So I've got my iPad connected to this recording. I'm going to bring it up here on the screen. I'm just going to show you what exactly it looks like. So I'm using the Facebook Pages app, and if you're not used to using a tablet or your iPhone or your Android to, to update on Facebook and you've got a business page, by all means get the Facebook Pages app. It is going to save you a lot of time to do that. So here we see our Blue Cow Creative page And what you're going to do is, what you would normally think to do is you're going to do video, you click on the video button there, okay? That's not how you do it, okay? What you got to do is you got to click on publish, and then before you write something on the very bottom, you see those 4 icons? You got the camera, you got the Facebook Live, the location, and the emoticon. So we're going to click on the red live button right here, okay? So it's going to show up, it's going to say Live Video. So we're going to click on this. It's going to access my camera and my microphone. You're going to see me here in a second. Hey, there we go. And what we're going to do is we're going to go live. So I'm going to do this right now. And we're going to do Facebook Live Demo. So we're giving it a bit of a description for everybody. And here we go, we're ready to go live. I didn't shave. Hmm, maybe I should have done that before I went live, but that's okay. That's the benefit of this. So 3, 2, 1. Hey everybody, it's Shaun from Blue Cow Creative. This video here is, we're just doing a Facebook Live demo for a quick little video tutorial that we've got going online. So what I'm doing is showing people in this video how to go live, and the only way to do that was to actually go live on Facebook. So as you see here, we've got nobody connected at the moment, but even comments can appear on the bottom when they do connect. Now you're not going to instantly get people connected to your Facebook. Now the benefit with this is once you create this live video and you finish your broadcast, it becomes an actual video on your company's timeline. So one of the things that you can do also, as you see here on the top right corner, You've got the little camera button or the camera, the two arrows. If we click this, it's going to flip to the back camera. So if I come back a little bit, right, there's the screen that we're using to broadcast with. And of course it's got some focus issues on my iPad, but we're just going to flip back. So you can flip between yourself, you can flip between something that you're looking at, but it's a great way to get people to engage in you. The other tool that you've got available in the top left-hand corner is you're able to change some of the filters. So if you wanna get funky or classical, country, we've got some different features that are here, or no filters. And we've got a pen, so if we wanted to, let's say we're gonna go blue and we're gonna put some little colors on here, gonna put some clouds in the sky for everybody to see. Maybe we're going to go ahead and put a mustache on me. It doesn't really matter, but if you're going to be using this, one great way to do this would be to, let's say you're a contractor and you're wanting to do a demonstration about something you've done on a home. You could flip it over, show that video, narrate it live, and then put some of those drawings on there to just kind of point to different things. Or if you're broadcasting sports, you're able to then draw on the screen. So it's a great way to use those kind of things for your Facebook Live. So like I said, we're recording the video here, we're just showing people what it's like to go Facebook Live, and it's going to be part of our tutorial video that you're going to see here coming out on our Facebook page. So thanks for— now we got 2 people connected here, oh, we got 1 person connected. We're just going to get out of this and come back and say thanks. Thanks for watching our Facebook Live video. All right, so just like that, it ends the live video. What it's going to do, it's going to give you a video summary of how many viewers, so 2 minutes and 27 seconds. We got people in here. We could save it to our camera roll on our device, but it's also then going to make it a video. Once it processes on our Facebook page. So check it out. Some tips that I wanna tell you about with this. If you're out there and you're not connected to a Wi-Fi connection and using your data network, make sure that your background doesn't have a lot of movement in it. The more movement that's in the video in behind you or you're walking around, the higher amount of bandwidth, so the amount of data is needed to get that video online. So if you're able to secure your camera or your phone to something, whether it's a stationary mount or you can set it up on something, that's going to make it a lot easier. It's going to make the video seem clearer and it's going to provide a better experience for your viewers. So thanks for watching Facebook Live. I'm Shaun with Blue Cow Creative.
