Roy and Mercy Chacko opened Gracious Indian in Halifax in 1993, making everything from scratch and baking samosas instead of frying them. Their son George helped streamline the menu in 2007, and now they're expanding with new locations and a frozen roti product for stores.

Gracious Indian is Halifax's authentic healthy Indian food restaurant. Rich in family history dating back to 1993, with recipes using only fresh ingredients, Gracious Indian offers you a unique culinary experience to traditional fast food. With two locations in Metro, Gracious Indian chefs start every day prepping and preparing the the freshest ingredients for that day's dishes. You won't find a deep fryer in their kitchens. Even their samosas are baked, not fried. Committed to serving their customers healthy, fresh meals, they've worked hard to develop recipes that are nutritious as they are delicious. Gracious Indian has roots as far away as India as well as in the heart of Halifax. Roy and Mercy Chacko, originally from South India, immigrated to Canada in 1993.
But then you had this thing in your mind that whatever your parents had the business, you wanted to, you know, probably want to start the same. And you change the name to Gracious Indian.
From 2007 to 2009, their son George and his parents worked closely together on a concept for a new kind of restaurant. Drawing on Roy and Mercy's wealth of knowledge and recipes, they developed a small sustainable menu for Gracious Indian.. It hit on traditional dishes that everyone loved, but every recipe was designed to be made fast, fresh, and to order.
I'm using all the ingredients from scratch. Actually, onions, garlic, ginger, all from the fresh one we were using because that's what we were using in the house. So the same way I started making the recipes, adding different spices together and made new recipes.
They spent years perfecting their recipes to ensure that Mercy's passion passion for delicious, healthy, traditional food can be tasted in every bite.
We have a great customer base. We have a lot of fans that follow us through social media. We have customers that give us regular feedback that's helped us improve our products. I think in terms of the future of Gracious Indian, we'd like to see more stores, not just in Metro but through other cities. And we're also looking to expand our frozen line of products, so have our roti product in store shelves so that we can see customers making their own roti wraps at home. And so that's, that's one of the products that we're looking to expand. We're also We're looking to do more catering orders. We've done quite a few orders for some big organizations like the IWK, and we've had some great feedback. So we're looking to expand our catering side as well so that we can cater more events and have more people try our product and again take that name of Gracious Indian to the next level.
We invite you to check out Gracious Indian today and experience a traditional taste of India.
