Master Your Podcast Workflow: From Recording to Promotion | Professional Podcast Production, Editing

In this tutorial, Shaun Whynacht walks viewers through his end‑to‑end podcast production workflow, from recording to promotion. He begins by explaining his recording setup: remote guest interviews are captured with Squadcast (owned by Descript) while solo episodes are recorded directly in Descript. After recording, he downloads the WAV files, imports them into a multitrack editor (Adobe Audition, with Audacity as an alternative), and uses a template that includes opening music. He isolates each participant on separate tracks, applies noise reduction, and exports a single mixed waveform. Next, he opens Descript, creates a new audio project, imports the mixed file, and lets Descript automatically transcribe the episode. Descript detects and labels speakers, allowing Shaun to extract clips by name. While the transcription runs, he creates episode graphics in Canva, pulling the guest’s headshot and details from an intake form on his website, using Canva’s background remover and a pre‑made template, then downloads a PNG. Returning to Descript, he cleans up the transcript by correcting misspellings and removing filler words, then exports a plain‑text transcript with speaker labels. He copies this transcript into ChatGPT and issues a series of prompts to generate a podcast description, five guest quotes, a LinkedIn article, social‑media posts, YouTube tags (formatted with commas), and optional email copy. Shaun emphasizes reviewing and tweaking AI‑generated content to match his tone. He concludes by encouraging viewers to like, subscribe, and comment, noting that many alternative workflows exist but this is his preferred method.

Hey guys, I get asked several times from clients and potential clients who want to start a podcast, how do I actually do that? What do I need? Well, I'm going to show you here just my workflow in this quick video. So when I record an episode, I am using either one of two tools. If I'm having a guest, I'm using Squadcast, which is also owned by Descript. So if I'm doing a solo episode, I record directly into Descript. So in this case, this one I did with Joran Hoffman, which is the current episode that I'm working on, was a guest episode. So we use this so we could collaborate because we're in two different locations. So once that's done, I then go ahead and I download all the WAV files. So I have those on my computer and it separates it into two tracks. Then I prefer to go over here to Adobe Audition. Now you can use Audacity, um, or any other program that's multi-track editor. Uh, so I have a template set up that has my opening music, and then I separate each of our audios on a separate track here. And the reason I do that is if there's noise or something on my end or on the guest's end, I can actually isolate that or clean it up. In this case, there was some background hum, so I was able to do some noise reduction and reduce it here. I then export it into a single waveform for the show. This isn't it here, but once it's done, then I get an actual file. So if I go to my documents here, I have my podcast episode right there, episode 139. Now, now here comes the next step that really saves a lot of time. Open up Descript and I go new audio project and I take that entire episode with the music and everything and I put it in here. So I'm going to go EP 139. Um, you can name it whatever, it doesn't really impact too much. And then we're going to add the file into Descript. And this is going to transcribe it for me. So it's going to take all the audio and put it into text. Now, why would I want to do that? Well, you're going to see in just a moment why this is important and how I'm going to utilize this. So it's going to go in here, it's going to analyze the file. This is what I like about it, is that you can say, okay, how many people are talking? It's going to detect those people speaking, and then you can identify. This This is so that if you want to extract the clips based off the names, you can do so. So it's going to detect the speakers here. It's going to come up. It's going to ask me to identify them in just a second. So wait for that to happen. And when it happens, it'll just play an audio clip from each of the people speaking, and then I can type in the name of it. And it takes a few minutes depending on how long the episode— there we are. Identify speakers. So let's go ahead and do that. And click on this and say get started. Yeah, I was working at a different startup before this as an employee. So I'm going to put in his name. Thank you so much for joining me. And then there's me. All right, there we go. So now it's starting to transcribe, 50% done. It takes not too long to transcribe this and then will give us the audio file. Now while this is happening, what I do next is I go and I start to generate the graphics. So for that, I use Canva. So I'm going to go over to Canva and log into my account here. Continue with email. All right, so see if it logged me in with the right account. It didn't. My computer auto-logs me into a different account that I have. So we're going to continue another way. We're going to log in with email like that. My password app should find me. All right, now once we're in, I'd recommend that you have a project for your graphics. You you can utilize. Now I'm just gonna scroll through and find mine for the show. So there it is right there. Now I keep a, a slate on here. If I have a guest and I have an image of them, I'll, I'll do that. Or if I do a solo episode, I'll, I'll use this type of one that's here. So I'm just gonna go ahead and find the details from the guest here in just a second. I'll come right back. Okay. So one thing that I also wanna point out here is that I use a form on my website for all guests to fill out before they come on the show. So I I get this great intake form that I can help run the content and build the content and build all the questions for the episode. So in here, we're going to grab his headshot from the file that he has uploaded to us. Get rid of this little thing popping up here. So there's our guest, Joren. So I'm going to save that to the computer. Just like that. I'll come back here, and then I'm also going to get the name of the show. So I also asked the guest, well, hey, what should we title the show? So leverage someone else's network to grow your business, how's affiliate marketing work on B2B SaaS, lessons learned from bootstrapping. Okay, so what we're going to do is it's more in line with this one, so we're going to copy that and we're going to come back to Canva and we're going to use this one down here. So we're going to paste in that title to there. We're going to put in his name here, so we'll grab that over here so I have the exact spelling. So by doing this, takes a lot of the guesswork out of creating this content. Now I'm going to go ahead and, um, upload before I remove this, because this is scaled properly. I'm going to upload his file. It's going to show up over the left side here. I'm going to drag them over top of the previous guest. Okay, now you're going to say, what about, what about the background? So we're going to click Edit Photo and we're going to do Background Remover. Now it's still uploading, so we just got to wait for that to fully upload and this will appear. There we go. It's going to go ahead and it's going to remove that background from him and and make them transparent and then show through the actual blue of our graphic that's there. Just like that. Perfect. Now it looks like there's a bullet point in here, which I don't want. We're going to get rid of that. And then we're going to take the name of this, copy, and we're going to throw it up here just so it names it the same as this. So we're going to go download that graphic. This one here, make it a PNG, that's fine. And we're going to download. Now let that happen because we're not going to do the uploading part of it right now. We're just going to get into what we're using with that transcript. So let's hop back over to Descript, and here it is right there. So what we're going to do here is I'm going to see quickly if there's anything that is misspelled in here. So I'm going to create that to Yoren. We're going to correct all the Yorens that are there. And then also in here, you can remove the ums and the ahs. So that is going to show up under Actions, and it's going to say Remove Filler Words, and which it will, and we'll say Remove All Those. So it's going to go ahead and remove all those from the transcript. Now that's pretty much all that we're going to do in Descript for that. So we're going to export this as a transcript. And what we want to do is we want to include the speaker labels like that. All right, and we're going to go ahead and export it to a plain text file. It's fine, we'll just call that. Now that we have that, we can open it up in our text editor and we can get rid of Descript and we can get rid of this. Now we're going to go into our friend ChatGPT. And here's our transcript, and I'm just going to copy that to my clipboard so I have it. Now I'm going to go in here and I'm going to say, based on the transcript below, write me a podcast episode description for This episode, the podcast is called the Content Amplification Podcast, and the host is— okay. So I'm gonna go down here and put, this is the Trand script. I'm gonna paste it in. Now we're gonna let ChatGPT do its thing. So now I'm gonna get all this that I'm gonna use for the podcast episode when I'm posting it. And we're gonna go through and we're gonna do a bunch of other things that are in here because I put in the names of the speakers that are in there, I can give ChatGPT additional references for different things that I want it to do. So we're gonna go ahead and wait for this to finish because I'm just gonna do it all at once and then we can come back later and start to post this. So there we go. So it did that one perfect. And now I'm gonna say, now give me 5 quotes that Joran said in the episode which I can use in social media posts. So because the name here is here, it's actually finding that and taking the quotes out of that from what he said. Now I can utilize those in some social graphics with Canva or on Twitter to link back to the episode. So this is a great tool for that. All right, this one I really like next is based on the episode transcript. Let's see, ChatGPT, write me an informative and educational LinkedIn article that I can publish that will also mention the podcast episode. So where I like to put my content is, uh, on the podcast, on YouTube, on LinkedIn as an article versus just posting a link saying, oh, here's Here's the episode. I like to create other content for that. Now you're seeing me generate all this stuff with ChatGPT. Of course, I'm going to read through it. I'm going to make some adjustments before I post it. I don't recommend you take it verbatim just as it is. But what we're doing here is we're creating a baseline. We're creating that initial starting point for content that you can now go and splinter out and start to work with and figure out if it's in your tone. So for example, with this article, what I would recommend is maybe you copy it. After, and you throw it into another chat and say, okay, let's work on this article, change the tone, change this, change that. I'm trying to get it really fine-tuned for what you want it to be. But by putting it all in one single chat initially, it's referencing from that initial transcript at the top. So it's always knowing what's in this chat, right? So we can do all this. Some last things that you're going to want to do is Write me a social media post to promote this episode. Right, so now it's going to do that. Now you're going to notice if you just give it something like that, it's always going to say new podcast alert. You're going to notice some consistencies with the way that ChatGPT and AI starts to generate this type of content. So you may want to modify some of that. They'll always put in these little emojis, um, um, or little clipart pieces that are in there. Um, now here's the last thing that some people don't do. Um, based on the transcript, give me a list of tags to use when I post this episode on YouTube, because YouTube uses tags, uh, and it's like keywords that are there. So it's going to go and it's going to analyze it, and it's going to put a list here. Now one thing that you'll need to know is for YouTube, you can't copy and paste a list in this format. So what I do next is I say, great, and it likes praise. Can you display this list separated with commas? So it takes that list and it puts it with commas because that is how YouTube accepts that. So you can now copy and paste this whole block and it will separate all those tags properly. So that is my workflow with most podcast episodes. I may go a bit deeper and be like, okay, if I'm going to send this out to my email list, write me an email to promote it, but also promote the article that was written in there. So you start to use this to leverage a lot of your workflow. So hopefully that was helpful. You gained something from that. Please hit like, subscribe to our channel, share this, do all the stuff that you do, show some love. If you have any questions, though, put it in the comments. I'll do my best to reply to those comments and answer your questions. This was my workflow. There are many other workflows that are out there, many other softwares. This is just the one that I like, and this is the way that I do my podcast. So thanks for watching and have a great day.
