What's with your email?

Shaun Whynacht explains why businesses should ditch free email accounts like Hotmail for branded addresses using their own domain. Google's G Suite costs $5 per month per mailbox, syncs across devices via IMAP, and filters spam better than personal accounts.

Hey, it's Shaun Whynacht with Lukau Creative. Today in this video, I'm going to keep it short, but I want to talk to you about email and get you thinking about your email address. Some things that I see all the time, unfortunately more frequently than not, is businesses promoting themselves using free email accounts. And by free email accounts, I mean, you know, at Hotmail or Yahoo, when really it's not that hard or out of your reach to have a properly branded email account out there to use for your marketing. And by properly branded, I mean use using the domain that you have for your business. Most likely you have a website, and if you don't have one right now, you're going to be getting one, or you should be getting one. But let's just say your domain is abccompany.com. A branded email would be info@abccompany.com or joe or sally@. That's what I mean by a branded email account and staying away from those providers like Hotmail or Yahoo. Now a lot of businesses say, well, you know what, Gmail's the way to go. I love the Gmail system. Well, the good news is that Gmail allows you to have your branded email run through their Gmail system. And they've just recently rebranded. It used to be called Google Apps for Business, now it's called Google's G Suite. And for $5 US per month per email address, you have access to using their full suite of Gmail tools but under your branded email account. And it's really quite awesome because for one, it allows you to use their access, so using the Gmail system that if you've got a Gmail account, you're familiar with. But the real power is in the way that their emails are set up, and it's using something called IMAP. And I'm not going to get too technical on you, but the benefit of this is you can have your email account on multiple devices—on your iPad, on your cell phone, through webmail, through Outlook, Windows Mail. You can have it on all of them if you choose. But the way IMAP works is if you pick up your phone and you read an email, or you send an email, or delete an email, when you go to your other devices, it is synced exactly the way it was on that other device. So you delete an email, it's gone off the other ones. Whereas before, if you're using what was called POP3, you would download it on multiple devices, and if you deleted one from here, it was still over there, and it just, it didn't work really well. So that's number 1. And 2, Google is awesome at spam filtering. If you use any other email, you know you get a lot of unwanted messages in your inbox, a lot of spam, and it takes a lot of time sorting through that. Gmail is phenomenal for doing that, so it is well worth the investment. You're in business for the long haul. You want to have the best possible tools available to you, so please look at Google's G Suite. It is the one that I recommend to all clients, and when I'm setting up emails for people, that's the only one that I'm actually going to, to recommend and move forward with doing. We're not going to ask you to go ahead and do it through your hosting provider. And if you don't have a domain, they're really quite inexpensive. I think the last time I checked, GoDaddy had a sale on for $2.99 for the year to buy your domain. So check it out. And ultimately, if you say, you know what, Shaun, this is way over my head, I don't even know how to connect this, no problem. Contact me. I do it all the time. I can set up your email account for you through Google's G Suite and have you up and running in the same day. Day. So thanks for watching.
