Why Pinterest is important for your business

Shaun Whynacht explains why retailers, authors, and service businesses need Pinterest. Unlike Facebook, Pinterest users actively search for product ideas and save them to boards, creating a longer sales window than other social platforms. Saved pins eventually link back to your store, turning inspiration into actual purchases.

Hey, it's Shaun Whynacht from Blue Cow Creative. I want to talk to you about Pinterest. Now if you are in the retail industry, you're going to want to pay attention to this. I'm going to talk to you about the Pinterest consumer process. Now Pinterest is a great social media platform, but more importantly, it is an exceptional social media platform if you have a product to sell. Now let me tell you the difference. Now let's take for example Facebook. Facebook is a social network and it's a place where people go to hang out and connect and that kind of thing, but Pinterest on the other hand is is a social network where people look for products, where they look for ideas, but there's one key step in this entire process that is different in Pinterest than it is in Facebook that you'll be able to capitalize on and use it in your business. Here I have on the board is basically 3 blocks, and that's how we're going to break it down here for you, 3 steps of how people, how consumers use Pinterest. They're searching through Pinterest, and it's a digital pinboard, so you can pin photos of products. You can now pin video, which is even cooler, but what they're doing in the first step is they're going through looking for ideas and they're getting inspired. Inspiration is the first thing that they see. They see something and they're going to get— I'm just going to use red here and we're going to put inspire. They get inspired. When they get inspired, how do they actually show that? Quite frankly, how they do it is they repin, which means I like this idea, I'm gonna take it from this page or this pinboard and repin it on my pinboard. Okay, so they're gonna be repinning. That then moves them into Phase 2. Now Phase 2 is where they store the items. Okay, so we're gonna put store at the top. Okay, so they're storing that. Now this is the key point right here is they're then organizing and sorting that through using pinboards. So they have different ideas. So whether it's home renovation ideas or fashion ideas or products I want to buy, I know on my pinboard I have cool stuff that I'd really like to own, you know, maybe a pinboard, or, or great renovation idea, great decorating idea. Those are some things that people are doing. So they see a great product that you offer, and maybe they're not going to buy it today, but they're going to pin it because they think it's cool. Okay, so they are then storing it and they're building different pinboards, okay? Choo-choo-choo. And the key to this one here is the fact that they are sorting and storing. So unlike Facebook and Twitter where things happen and then chronologically the time passes and they kind of fall down through the cracks and move forward, now people are storing your ideas and your concepts. Which this is really great because it then moves into the most important phase of all this, which we all want to do, we all want to make money, is then they get into the buying phase. So they find these items that they want, they, they've stored them, they've sorted them, they like it, and then when they see the product or they want to get that product, then it's linked back to your store, your online business, or your, your physical business, and they know where to get it. Or if they're out seeing it in a different store, whether your product lines are in other stores, they're going to remember it because they have invested the time to like it, sort it, and store it. So they're buying it, which turns into dollars for you. So if you're in the retail business, if you make products, if you're an author and you write books, or you have any kind of product that people want to buy, even if you're a service business, you should really be involved in Pinterest. It's going to come back and it's going to help you because it's a great social platform and it's growing. The momentum is just moving faster and faster. Okay? So get involved in Pinterest.
