Shelley Hitz suggests five one-minute daily actions for writers: write one more sentence, unsubscribe from draining accounts, reply to potential collaborators, pray about the year ahead, or celebrate the win. Small actions compound into real progress and better mental health.
Hey, my hit splits family.
This has been such a fun little podcast, but I wanted to share something that I posted in our community for Christian Book Academy. And if you've been following with me for long, you know, I recommend doing 15 minute actions. You know, we've done our 15 minute writing challenge for years. I think some seven or eight years. And it's always, always successful where, you know, it helps writers just get more writing done. Because part of the resistance to writing is just getting started, really, with most things in life. But if we just get started and you just say, okay, I'm going to sit down and just do 15 minutes, many times it leads to more. But what if you, you implemented one minute daily actions? So what if you took that down to even a shorter amount of time? It's crazy how well it works. And so I just wanted to share with you a few options. So here are five different one minute daily actions that can create big results for you. So, number one, what if you would just write one more line, you know, one more sentence to your current work in progress or add one more sentence to your outline. One minute. You're not saying, I'm even going to write a paragraph, I'm just going to write a sentence, I'm going to write a line. Number two, unsubscribing and unfollowing people who don't bring you joy. Now, this is something that I have done religiously for years and it's for my mental health. And you know, as I talked about in the previous episode, social media can be really, really difficult on, on our mental health. But also, who are we allowing in our inbox? And it could be that this person is a great person, but it's just not a fit for you right now in this season. And no, no shame, no, you know, nothing. It's just you need a break and you need to have some margin in your inbox. And so if you've signed up for a freebie, if you've signed up for something, you know, from a conference or a summit, even from one of our conference speakers, even if it's my list and it's not serving you anymore, unsubscribe, you can always come back later. You can always come, you know, find a way to subscribe later if it is a fit later. But just one minute to unsubscribe or unfollow people who aren't bringing you joy or aren't relevant to what you need right now. Number three, you could reply to social media posts or emails for people you want to collaborate with. So our most recent conference was all about collaborations. And you know, even if you're not spending a ton of time on social media, if you're on their email list, reply to their emails, it takes one minute. Or, you know, comment on their post. If you are on social media, they will start to know who you are after a while. And it won't make, you know.
Initiating that collaboration so much easier because you'll already be friends. You know you already, they'll already know you in some way. Number four, praying and dreaming with God about where you'll be next year. So just for a minute, you know, just pray and dream with God. I have a training, you know, dreaming with God about your writing. Now it's longer than a minute, but you know, you could just distill it down just into a minute and say, okay, Lord, where? Well, you know, where do you want to take me in this next year? And I always say playing a pencil, because oh my goodness, things definitely can change when you allow God to lead you. But you'll start creating goals and taking actions that move you in that direction as you begin to intentionally think about it. And number five, celebrate that you did something for one minute today. You'll create new neural pathways that reinforce how amazing you are. And so just to recap the five ideas and you can create your own one minute idea so it can be anything but number one, writing one more line or sentence to your current work in progress or your outline. Number two, two, unsubscribing and unfollowing people who don't bring you joy. Number three, replying to social posts or emails for people you want to collaborate with. Number four, praying and dreaming with God about where you'll be next year. And number five, celebrate that you did something for one minute today. So set a one minute timer, try one of these and just watch incredible things happen. It's a snowball effect. It's the compound effect that I've mentioned before. It's like as you do something small consistently and it will make a difference. So let me know, let me know if you try this. I would love to hear what you did. And you know what, it just could create a spark in you that, that generates something much, much bigger. So I'm excited for you, I'm cheering you on and go take that one minute action now.
