#043 - Done is Better than Perfect
30 Jan 2023 · 4 min
Shelley Hitz argues that creators should ship their work instead of waiting for perfection. She shares how perfectionism delayed her first book, Mirror Mirror, Am I Beautiful?, and describes using a one-day conference and lead magnets to build an audience while iterating after launch.

Hey. Hey. Welcome back to the Hit Splits. This is Shelly Hits. And today I just wanted to talk about how done is better than perfect. So we had a Christian Book Academy member post in our private group a image that she created for her book launch signing. And so proud of her and so excited because her book is done and published and now she's working on launching it to the world. And so she was asking for feedback on the image and I got, gave her, you know, some feedback. And you know, ultimately I said, I'm so proud of you and done is better than perfect. So where is it in your life related to writing, publishing, and marketing where you may be stalled because you're wanting something to be perfect? I'm not saying to do sloppy work. I'm not saying that we don't want to do our best work, but I am saying that sometimes that elusive, you know, perfection that we sometimes strive for keeps us from moving forward. And I'll be honest, I am not a perfectionist. CJ does tend to be a perfectionist and, and he has openly shared before that that has held him back at times from moving forward or from getting writing done or whatever it is. And so I'm working on setting up our new system for our one day conferences. And you know what? I'm embracing this. Done is better than perfect. I am excited about it. And we've already had.
Most of our speakers confirm, just waiting for one more person to get back with me. But I am just realizing there, there are a lot of little details that we have to now set up differently than we did with the previous conference. And it can get overwhelming. And that's where I just take a deep breath and I'm like, okay, what is the most important thing to get done? You know, what, what do we need to do now? What can we do later? And a reminder, done is better than perfect. And so I just encourage you as well. Where is it that you need to move forward? Where is it that you just need to say, okay, I'm gonna get this done and I'm gonna do it the very best that I can, but it does not need to be perfect to impact lives. It does not need to be perfect to have a impact in what God wants to do. I just need to sometimes do it? I remember our very first book, Mirror Mirror, Am I Beautiful? It was far from perfect. I was just putting it out there, you know, I just, I had no idea what I was doing. However, we have updated it several times. We've updated the COVID we've had it edited several times. You know, all the things. And so that's the other thing. You know, once you release something to the world, whether it's a blog post, it's a book, it's whatever it is, like, you always have the opportunity to go back and update it and, you know, whether it's your lead magnet, like, done is better than perfect. Our upcoming conference is actually about email marketing. I would rather you have something up there and having a way for people to connect with you and to, you know, have an audience that, that you can share with, than waiting for the perfect lead magnet. And I'll tell you, sometimes it takes trial and error. So putting something up there, seeing, like, how people respond to it, and then you can always update it, you can always change it, you can always do something later. Done is better than perfect. So say this with me if you're able right now. Say it with me out loud. Done is better than perfect. All right, friends, I hope this encouraged you today, and I'll talk to you in the next hiit splits.
