#044 - Sometimes You Need to Change Your Surroundings to Change How You Feel
31 Jan 2023 · 5 min
Shelley Hitz (host of Hit Splits) advises that when you feel stuck, changing your physical surroundings can help refresh creativity and mood—though spiritual approaches (prayer) are also acknowledged. She offers practical, sensory strategies for writers and creatives (music or silence, different work locations, walks, lighting/candles, essential oils, fresh flowers, thrift store or bookstore outings, and a walking pad/sit-stand desk), cites Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way as a useful resource, and invites listeners to share feedback via a private group or email.

Welcome back to another episode of Hit Splits. This is Shelly Hits, and today I just wanted to talk about that. Sometimes you need to change your surroundings in order to change how you feel. This isn't always the case. You know, sometimes we just need to ask God for his strength, his wisdom to push through. However, if you've been in a funk, if you've felt like you just haven't been making progress for whatever reason, and you're writing your publishing or book marketing, you might want to consider changing your surroundings. So this might mean that you try working with music or working without music or working with some sort of background noise. Maybe you change where you work, and if you normally work at home, you try going to a coffee shop, or maybe you take breaks and you start doing what Julia Cameron talks about in the artist's way, and you take walks for that creative inspiration. You know, sometimes we just need a little fresh air, a little sunshine or some music or just a different setting. You know, sometimes when you feel stuck in a rut, it's. It's time to think about possibly doing something different just to get yourself out of that rut. But that's where just asking the Lord, like, is this something that needs a change in my surroundings? You know, sometimes even just little things like lighting a candle or, you know, having essential oils, you know, all of those things are activating your senses, your sense of smell and sight and sometimes music with sound, you know, engaging different senses can help as well. And one of the things that Julia Cameron also talks about in her book the Artist's Way, it's not a Christian book, but it's a spiritual book. So if you haven't read it, I recommend it. It's a great book for artists, including writers. And she talks about filling your creative well and doing things that help us to fill our creativity and our creative well. And you may just be on empty right now. And so maybe you need to do some things that help inspire you. And like I said, it could be something simple like buying some fresh flowers and placing them in your office where you write. Or it could be like you go on a thrift store shopping outing and maybe that will inspire something. Or you go to the library or a bookstore and you start looking through other books or you watch a movie or. I mean, there's many different ways to fill your creative well and.
Your circumstances and your surroundings is just one part of it. So. So why don't you just try something today? Just. Just think of one small thing that you might be able to do differently Today to change your surroundings when you sit down to write or you sit down to do your marketing tasks or whatever you're working on today, what is one small thing you can do differently? I know for me, lately I have been playing music while I work as long as I can. Like sometimes I'm recording videos or podcast or I'm recording things for my team. And so, you know, obviously I can't do it then, but the music really helps me. And then something else that I've been doing lately is I have a new setup for my desk. I think I talked about this before and I have like this walking pad thing where it just goes right under my desk and then I have a sit stand desk. But I have been trying, you know, just to walk while I do work. Now I don't walk when I do really deep work. But that kind of is a change in my surroundings as well, and it helps. Today I went for a walk outside and it's been so cold lately. I haven't been going for walks and it just reminded me how good it is to get outside, to go for a walk, get that fresh air. I was all bundled up because here in Colorado Springs it is cold right now. But think of one thing you can do differently and I'd love to hear.
