Shereene Idriss explains how to use hydroquinone safely: apply it at night because it increases sun sensitivity, pair it with tretinoin if your skin tolerates it, and alternate nights if irritation happens. Consistency matters more than aggressive use.

This is also a terrible angle. But hydroquinone, I usually like it at night. It might make you more sun sensitive. And obviously try to know when you want to use at night. If you can tolerate the hydroquinone and you're tolerating your tretinoin, fine, you can pair them together on the same night. But if you find that one is very sensitizing and you're very sensitive to it, then alternate the nights. Because consistency with a little bit of something is better than intensity, where you go wrong and strong, and you use both and your face gets inflamed and swollen and irritated in the process. We're still just, just here, by the way.
