Dermatologist Shereene Idriss compares Radiesse and Sculptra, two collagen-stimulating alternatives to traditional fillers. Radiesse is calcium-based and gives instant volume plus months of collagen building, ideal for jawline sculpting. Sculptra is a powder that builds collagen gradually over sessions with no immediate lift, better for subtle cheek and temple volume. Both are long-lasting, so they're not for first-timers or trend-chasers.

Are you absolutely terrified of fillers because of social media, TikTok, Instagram, leading you to believe that you're going to look like some sort of blob of a human being? And so now you're curious about Radiesse and Sculptra because apparently they help to stimulate your own collagen? Because if so, yes, they do help to stimulate your own collagen, but not both in the same way. And so they're two very different products, and this is how I explain it to my patients. Radiesse is calcium suspended in a gel, so you're going to get two effects. The first is an immediate filling effect from the gel itself. Two, you'll get collagen stimulation over the next few months. It tends to give a much more structural definition and approach, and that is why I like it for sculpting, especially the angle of the jaw, to give you that sharp jawline that you can basically cut cheese with. Whereas Sculptra, on the other hand, is made up of a powder known as polylactic acid that we mix with water, and it's not going to give you an immediate cosmetic result. It's going to work very gradually over over several treatments, over several months to stimulate your own body to produce collagen over time. It is much slower. It is much subtler than any traditional filler. And you can think of Sculptra as like watercolor paint that works on a large body surface area to help to create collagen over a larger area, like if you're really hollow in your temple or in your cheek. So neither one is better. They're just very different tools for very different jobs. And because both rely on your body's response, your injector's technique Patient selection, meaning are you the right candidate? And number 3, um, your expectations matter more than the product itself. And one last point, these are all long-lasting biostimulators, so this is not something I would recommend for a first-time cosmetic patient or someone who is chasing a trend because they are going to stick around way longer in your face than any traditional filler.
