Archery Tic-tac-toe & Our Shooting Styles

A Pro Archer Shot-Coach YouTube video ("Archery Tic-tac-toe & Our Shooting Styles", Aug 25, 2022) in which Shane and Nick play a target-based tic-tac-toe game as a drill to prepare for hunting season. The drill emphasizes aiming at different spots and changing distances to simulate hunting conditions. The hosts compare shooting styles (glove vs. tab; split-finger vs. three-under), explain practical reasons for their preferences, and close with brief equipment notes (bow, poundage, length, and model). The transcript is conversational and contains repeated lines/banter.

Who's going first? You can. All right, so you know, this is game on. Oh, yeah.
I don't think that one counts.
All right. Where am I going? I guess I'm going to try.
You did the same thing I did.
Yes, I did. I meant badly. So the first guy that gets it in there, that's his square, right? Yeah.
I don't know. I think that looks like a line cutter right there.
Is that. Is that in the. Go. Go look and see where that is. Examine it.
I smoked the line there.
Wait, hold on. Let me look at that. Oh, that's definitely to the left. Oh, goodness.
People are gonna see this and realize we can't shoot.
Hey, I'm average at best. Oh, you're in. You're in that top right corner. Still gonna go. Okay, yeah, I'll take that. No, no. Oh, yes. Prepare to cry crocodile tears. Or not. Oh, I still got. I got two options now.
Oh, this is bad. This is getting desperate.
Ah, come on, Come on. Wait. That's not good.
Did I split the line or am I in?
You're in. The problem is, is we don't want you there.
I really like being there now.
Oh, I can do better than this.
I should be able to do better than.
Yes. I think I did it. Chain one, take zero. You want to go again?
Yeah, sure.
Tic tac toe is actually a pretty good way to get ready for hunting season, because if you have. You can play it by yourself, or if you have two guys, that's ideal. But when somebody gets a square, of course you're going to aim for a different spot. So you're always aiming for a different spot on the target, which is good. Now, if you really want to change it up and take it to the next level, you would move back after every shot. Move back or move forward and shoot at a different place on the target and a different distance, which really would get you primed up for hunting season. But it's also just kind of a fun way to get tuned up for hunting season. Good way to practice. Mainly because you're shooting at a different spot. Spot every time. Because when you shoot at the exact same spot from the exact same distance every time, yeah, you can get really good. But we all know that in a hunting situation, that's not realistic. So it's going to be different all the times.
I guess it's my shot.
You go prepare for an instruction. You're in. Barely.
It counts.
Yeah, that counts.
I need to shoot more.
Don't we all? I think I'm to The right of that one. Oh, now I'm gonna. I get to make an excuse now. See, I'm shooting arrows that are all over the spine because I don't have any built up for me right now. Oh, spined all over the place. So, you know, half of them are spined correctly. Half of them aren't. So that's. That's my. That's my caveat. Get him on. Yeah. Center mass. Is that center square?
Yeah, that center square?
Yeah. Nope, I threw that one.
I'm gonna have to go pull arrows.
Say I got one. No, you got that top one before me. So that one don't count. Nope. We'll hook the Christmas lights. Oh, he's shooting one of the. One of mine. One of my.
Yep.
Okay.
I hit higher than I thought you have.
I've gotta hit that square or you're gonna win.
Yeah.
Okay. I got. Yeah. Yep. Game over. Cool. That's fun. So when I shoot, I shoot with a. With a glove. I prefer that over a tab. I mean, it's really. It's what you get used to. I like it because when I'm hunting, a lot of times I don't even put a glove on. Like, I'll just use my hunt. Like if it's cold, I'll just use my hunting gloves. And because I'm used to shooting with a glove, I don't even need to pack a regular shooting glove. Now, that doesn't work for everybody, but it does work for me. If I've got gloves that are nice hunting gloves. I can just. You know, you're only going to shoot a couple shots if you're out hunting, so it works perfectly. And then I don't have to worry about a shooting glove or a tab. That's just the way I do it. I like that over a tab. When I started shooting traditional archery, I shot split. That's. I did that for two, three years, but I switched to three under. The reason I switched to three under is because if you get in a situation where, say the deer or the animal comes in really, really close, then. And you don't like when I'm talking close. I mean like 10 yards and under or even 15 yards and under when you shoot three under. And here again, this is totally personal opinion. The way I do it is I put this arrow right up underneath my eye. So your point on like 15 yards and under. You can. You can literally sight down the arrow shaft and you're just point on. So if anything comes in, you know, you're not going to have any drop in 15 yards or under. So anything comes in that close, I mean, you can literally sight down the arrow and put that point right where you're wanting to hit, and it'll go there. Now you get a little further out. Of course, that doesn't work because you got to allow for the drop of the arrow. But that is the reason that I switched to three under. Split finger still is a great way to shoot. Just comes down to personal opinion. Now, if you're just starting out in archery and you start out close and you really don't know where. Where you want to be yet, a lot of times I'll tell people to start with three under just to figure out where you want to be, simply for that reason that you can sight down it and get in the ballpark and shoot pretty much where you're looking. And then, of course, as you become more familiar with it, you'll change to split finger, tab or glove or maybe stay three under or whatever. But that. That's why I like it. Nick shoes with a tab, he likes tabs. Why do you like tabs?
Because I don't have to put a glove on, and it's just, I pick it up, I stick it on, it works.
There you go. There you go. Personal opinion. Works good for you.
Because mostly, like, we shoot all kinds of different bows in the shop. So I just have this sitting around because instead of having to put a glove on, I can just grab this.
Yeah. A lot of times with a tab, you know, you don't have the individual fingers. So technically, I mean, if you think about it, probably do get just a little bit better release with the tab. I mean, if you're good with a glove and, you know, you probably wouldn't want to switch because that's what works for you. Right. So.
Because the key to good archery is consistency.
Yep. If you're standing on your head upside down, but you're hitting where you're aiming at, that's what works for you.
I've always shot split finger. Mostly what it's been is I've hunted rabbits and small stuff that jumps out. You only get a quick shot. And so with split finger, you're not aiming at anything. Because I shoot instinctive. You're not looking down anything. Your focus is on what you're shooting at. I don't shoot enough for. For it to be the best thing in the world, I need to shoot more. But what it lets me do is when I focus in on something, I can hit it real quick and it lets you get faster shots off because you're not aiming down anything. It's more akin to shooting a shotgun than it is a rifle. Because like how Shane shoots, he's aiming down the arrow. Takes him a little longer to line up on stuff. I can pick up an arrow and just zip it and be. If I'm shooting. All right. Pretty close to exactly where I was looking at.
Were you shooting with this bow, Lester?
Yeah, I switched over to the.
You shot a different one every time?
Yeah, why not? I haven't decided what I'm actually going to mess with.
Is that the top?
Yep. Top, middle square.
Yes, sir.
Yeah, so I just. I grabbed the.
That's that 54? Yep, that's that 54 speed demon there. Oh, that was kind of flew kind of weird, didn't it? Didn't that air fly a little weird? A little bit.
That's a 4fletch though. But also I don't think that arrows spine to it.
I got two down.
But also I haven't shot these arrows in like three years.
Yeah, those warriors. Nope.
Well, that was a quick game.
Yeah. Three down.
Three down.
That was fun. I'm shooting a 50 pound Blackhawk. This is a 56 inch AMO. I didn't realize it was that short. But shooting pretty good. Very smooth. I like it. So that's our SR Swift three piece. That's working for me.
You want to talk.
