Beginners Guide to Aiming a Traditional Longbow

Nick from Great Plains Traditional Bow Company walks through basic longbow aiming: nock the arrow, draw to under your eye, align the point on target, and lock your wrist with three fingers under the string. It works to about 15 yards. Ryan Holt used this exact method on Naked and Afraid.

Howdy, y'. All. This is Nick with Great Plains Traditional Bow Company. Today I'm going to be showing y' all the easiest, fastest method to shoot a bow for the very first time. Now, this method was actually taught to a guy who went on Naked and Afraid and was quite successful with it. The guy's name was Ryan Holt. He calls Shane, says, hey, I'm going on Naked and Afraid. I've never shot a bow ever in my life. Well, Shane tells him this method. All you're gonna do, take that arrow, go under your knocking point and draw right back to under your eye gun barrel, that arrow, put the point on what you want to hit and that's all there is to it. You're good out to 15 yards or so. Well, Ryan goes, okay, awesome. He on his way to the airport, goes to an archery range, shoots for an hour, goes on the show naked and afraid, uses that method, and that little bit of practice gets an impala. And he even learned how to skip arrows off the surface of the water to get ducks. So this is the method I'm going to teach y' all today. Alright, so to start this, we're gonna go over the basics of a bow and what things are called. So these are the limbs, these are what move. This is the riser, the handle portion. Where the arrow sets is the shelf. And this is your knocking point. And I think that's about all we need to know for today. Now, on an arrow, you've got your point, your nock and your fletchings. So what you're going to want to do, set your arrow on the shelf and put the knock of your arrow under your knocking point and pull back. It'll click. Now, how to hold a bow. Everybody holds a bow a little different. The easiest way to have consistency is really simple. Take your wrist, go locked out, put that bow right where it's comfortable, but where the string is not going to hit your forearm. That way it's repeatable. Then three fingers under, that's how we can get the arrow closer to our eye. And a lot of times you see people when they try to shoot a bow, they're going center of the face, they're trying to draw with their arm. We're drawn with our shoulders, so that's our motion right there. Elbow straight back in line with the arrow. Also, don't touch the arrow. Once you start drawing, if you let go of it, those fletchings will catch you. Don't do it, it hurts. So the other thing, little helpful tip. You see a lot of times when people are shooting, that'll happen. The way to avoid that is to come in and roll that string just a little bit. Come right back and under your eye. Put that point on what you want to hit and it.
