Short YouTube clip (Pro Archer Shot-Coach) giving practical tips for new ASA (3D) archery shooters: buy and practice on a Delta Mackenzie 12-ring target, bring mud boots and a rain jacket, shoot team shoots, set sights to correct yardage, support local tournaments and clubs, learn course management (play conservatively on long judged targets, be aggressive in marked-distance classes), and arrive with a high-quality ("elite") bow for best success.
My tip for a new ASA shooter coming in here would be to go buy a Delta Mackenzie target with the 12 rings, stand in your yard and shoot it all day long. Two things you need to bring, mud boots and a rain jacket. One thing that really helped, especially when I was coming up, is shooting the team shoot.
You want to set your sight to the correct yardage. I've learned that that's super important when you know you're going to shoot one of these targets.
Support your local tournaments. Support your local 3D club. Believe it or not, you don't have to 12 every target in ASA, especially in the judgin classes, you need to learn course management. You know you're not going to 12 every 50 yard target. So play a little safe. Learn to play that upper game. If you're shooting in a marked distance class, make sure your equipment's perfect and make sure you shoot aggressive out there. If they're giving you the number, you might as well take advantage of it. But if you're judging, you don't have to 12 every target. So the best advice I have for you is actually to show up with an elite bow. That's your best chance for success at these tournaments.
