Reflex-Deflex Longbow vs. Traditional Longbow

A short instructional/demo video (transcript) by Shane of Great Plains Bows comparing their B-model reflex-deflex longbow with the A-model traditional (D-shaped) longbow. Shane describes differences in limb shape, performance (speed, smoothness, hand shock), competition eligibility (IFAA rules), and gives buying recommendations for hunting vs. competition.

Hey guys. Shane with Great Plains bows. And today I wanted to talk about the difference in our reflex deflex longbow and our A model or traditional longbow, which would be this bow here. And you can see the A model right here is a far straighter limb. There's less reflex deflex in it versus the B model. It's got quite a bit more aggressive limb in it. So. So the A model, the traditional longbow meets the parameters of the IFAA organization, whereas the B model reflex deflex does not. So if you're looking for a bow that meets the parameters and you want to shoot in competition, you're going to need to go with the traditional longbow. The A model, I'll string these up and I'm going to talk a little bit about the different characteristics of the two. So you can see on the B model bow, the reflex deflex bow, the limb is more straight. It's not a true D shaped bow and it's got just a little bit of, just a slight recurve off to the end there. This makes this bow really fast and really smooth. It has a lot of stored energy in it. It's a very, very high performing longbow. So let me string up the A model, the traditional. So on this bow you can see you've got the classic D shape of the traditional longbow. This is a very good looking bow and it shoots great. It doesn't perform quite as good as the B model reflexdeflex bow, but it's just as quiet, not quite as fast as the B model bow and it's not quite as smooth. There's just a little more hand shock with the A model or the traditional bow, just because of the physics, the profile of the limb. If you're looking to buy one of these and you want a long bow for hunting, I would go with the B model, the reflex deflex bow. If you want to shoot competition and you want one bow that does it all, you need to get the traditional longbow or the A model. It's a very good hunting bow also and it will get into all your competitions a little faster, little smoother. Reflex deflex meets the IFAA parameters. Still a good bow. Just a little more hand shock. Not quite as fast as the B model. Both great bows. Thanks for watching.
