The Truth about Amazon Broadheads

Pro archer shot-coaches test cheap Amazon broadheads by weighing them, shooting into MDF and pork ribs, and checking for durability. Most failed: bleeder blades broke, points bent, ferrules came loose. Three models worked for hunting deer and pigs, including a tree shark single-bevel that split ribs cleanly.

Oh, Bullseye.
I bought six different broadheads from Amazon. They're all cheap and I'm gonna do a quick little test to see if they're even usable.
You gonna weigh all those?
Yeah, it'll take a minute. It's 123.4 and that's our high. Alrighty. So we're going to shoot these three. These are just three of the batch that I grabbed. This is a 48 pound bow. I've got kind of a stubby draw, so it's probably pulling closer to 45. We're going to shoot it through that MDF. That's half inch MDF. The weak spot on these is going to be right in there in that shank where it attaches to the arrow.
That was a thwack. There you go. Oh, Bullseye.
The blades are. They look like they're still relatively straight.
Ooh, yeah.
These are the next ones. They came in this box. Whatever's written on that has nothing to do with broadheads. And these are single bevel. We're just going to try. Pack of six of them. Instead of weighing out all of them, just 0 it out. 121.4. That would be our low. That would be our high. Single bevel refers to that bevel. That's all aluminum in there. So I really wonder how these will stand up. Same bow, Same arrows, same MDF70000.
Oh, I like that sound. Oh, I've seen something pop.
Oh, no.
Look like something black blew off. Unless that was a piece of feather. Cool. As soon as it hit that feral, that pretty much stopped it.
There's a screw that comes out stopped right at that screw. Those actually penetrated really well.
They made a lot different noise in.
That three blade, but that's loose. The shafts on them really are loose on that one.
I like the way those look. The only thing that would concern me on those is just how big that ferrule is and how prominent that screw is there for penetration. 70,000ths thick.
Oh, you glued that one back in.
Well, I pushed it in good. All right, It'll work.
The next ones come in this pack. These are two blade. I think a lot of these are just knockoffs of popular broadheads.
Yeah.
Just like that last one though. We have a lot of feral. These are hunting broadheads.
Hunting broadheads.
Hunting broadheads.
That's just the name of them. Hunting broadheads.
Two blade. Hunting broadhead.
Well, you can't get more specific than that.
These were supposed to be 125 grains. Nope. This is our low and that's our high.
I imagine those will sink pretty good.
Well, they are pretty, but just like the other one, there's a harsh change.
Yeah, it's a nice sound.
Oh, did I hit the other broadhead?
Believe it or not, that one actually sank deeper than the others and even hit this broadhead.
Oh, wow.
Yeah.
And it cut the aluminum on that other one.
So far, no breakages.
So far. I'm really impressed with these. These are these weird leaf shaped broadheads. Flies. 123.5. Hey, Shane, can we do something about the flies? These are substantially better. So that's our low again. We have super wide feral. This one's actually dished and that screws recess. So I wonder if those will penetrate a little better. All of these flies come from.
They just like you. That's all I. I could be here. Right there.
New piece of mdf. Same bow, same arrows.
Well, that's the leaf. Oh yeah.
I'm gonna reshoot that one. We're still good.
What?
That was weird.
That was really weird. I bet because that feral's so far forward. Yep. With that mdf, it just hit that and there wasn't enough blade to stick and it just bounced straight out. Oh, look, they're all loose. Look at that. They didn't penetrate as much as the others. That's not even three quarters of an inch. And the others an inch plus. Yeah.
On penetration, they're still attached really well.
Not broken.
No blade wobble onto these. They come in this box. Which looks like it has absolutely nothing to do with broadheads.
Looks like it's for lights or something.
You got to be real careful. And these are two blade with a little single bevel cutter on the side. That bleeder isn't super straight or super stiff. I have a theory that if it makes it up to that, it's going to break off. If you buy a broadhead and it rattles. That's not a good broadhead.
No, because this is loose. I could move this. So I think this here would probably would break pretty easy.
114.7.
Wait, that was supposed to be 125. Yep. Oh, my stars. No way.
No, it can't be that light.
Can't be.
This one is 103.3. And that's gonna be our high. We're gonna forgo using that one.
Come on, do it for science.
Yeah, we'll shoot that one. They don't thread in super happily at first. When I saw these, I had really high expectations. I think I'm gonna Be very disappointed very shortly.
Yowzer.
Do you hear that?
Yeah.
You know what that is? That's your deer running away.
Yeah, I'm 10 yards away and I can hear that. Oh, I think that broke.
I wouldn't doubt it.
Yeah, we got issues over here.
That bleeder just broke.
That was the loose one, right?
Yep, that was the loose one. Wow.
That is some thin metal on that bleeder though.
They seem like they penetrated pretty okay.
All of them penetrated about right there. They all went past the screw. Look at the point on that one. It bent that point right over. So that's real weak. That looks like a. What? Like a front of a. Those curved cowboy boots that you like. I would say these failed spectacularly on the MDF test.
I would not buy these again. These are the most traditional out of the traditional broadheads.
That's not a bad edge on there and I love the transition.
Some of them in that pack seem like that's coming apart.
Oh yeah. Yeah. This one's like that too. One thing I like, I. I'm always partial to black broadheads because I was busted once by light reflecting off of a shiny one.
Okay. So.
Yeah.
Do you see these? That are harassing me.
I don't know why they're harassing you. Just hold still. It's gonna hurt for maybe 45 minutes and that's about it. You, dude, they are on you.
Yeah.
On you like a pack of dogs on a three legged cat out of the air. That tells you how good I'm going to do on my elk hunt this year.
On the website. These are supposed to be 125. These are 153.
What?
They advertise two different weights. I ordered 125.
Are you sure you ordered the 125? These are definitely the 150s. Why do I want flies to land on him?
And at 152.
Yeah.
Same bow, same arrows, same MDF.
Nice.
They're in there a little bit onto.
The feral.
Kind of towards the edge.
It's bent just a. A little bit, but not like the whole thing like in that much. It's just.
But I bet you can straighten that.
With a pair of pliers. Oh yeah.
I don't with it.
This head is probably my favorite out of all those. The thing that I see going wrong with these possibly is like a dlam because this is kind of pressure riveted on dawn and probably spot welded is my guess. Oh, wow. Wow.
This is all of the other broadheads. These are the ones that didn't Quite make it. Those are those that we just shot.
Those. The three blade ones got the best penetration, but I think it's because that.
They actually crushed out.
Well, it's that you've got basically a fill point before you hit the blades, and so there's not a lot of resistance. That's why you got so much penetration on those. Almost the same penetration on all the other. We got a rack, two racks of ribs back to back. So we're simulating if we get a pass through. Of course, you know, there's a lot of variables. Same bow. These are actually the same arrows. We had a few more arrows of these fletched out. Here we go, where we're at with that. All right, there we go. I'm going to try to shoot this one just a bit. Little. Little bit lower in there. There we go.
What's your prediction? Is it going to break off in the ribs?
I don't. I don't know. It could go either way. I don't really think it'll break, but it might. We'll see. Josh, I might have trimmed some fletchings on your arrows. Sink that in there. Maybe right there. All right, let's go see what. What we did there.
They all went through both sets of ribs.
Oh, yeah. This one here penetrated the least.
It just clipped that back set.
That's that leaf one. It didn't even go as deep as the others, and it only went through one set of ribs. This is the next deepest. I'm just gonna unscrew it. That single bevel one. No damage whatsoever on that one. Oh, yeah, it broke. So it went through ribs on both sets. The next deepest one is this one.
Are those bleeders?
They're gone.
Okay. I'm not sticking my finger in there.
Those bleeders are gone. That. That is junk.
It did go through a rib, though.
Next one is this one. That's the three blade. There's no damage whatsoever on that blade. This is probably one of the sharpest out of the package. Well, I say no damage. There is right here. It looks like it's just bent a little bit where the damage on that blade was. It went clean through there and hit one rib. So not for not hitting any ribs and breaking them. That's not super good.
Look at the size of the hole that it left.
Yeah, this is the next deepest. So it went in here. No rib cut there. Here? Yeah, we cut a rib perfectly in half there. That's a clean cut. That's not a break. So the tip is bent over just the Very tip. Let's look at this one. Now this is our deepest penetration here. So this one's perfect. I mean there's no tip damage. It kind of lost some sharpness but it wasn't super sharp to begin with. Did cut into one of the ribs. It didn't cut all the way through. Even though this one didn't get it as much penetration, it cut two ribs completely in half. I would hunt with this.
I would.
To recap, I would hunt with this one. I would hunt with this one and I would hunt with this one. My top pick would be this one because there's no damage on it. It cut a rib. Cause it was second to deepest penetration. This one also cut a rib. This one cut two ribs.
If I had to pick a favorite out of all of them, it would be this tree shark, single bevel looking thing. It split two ribs cleanly in half.
Cleanly. I mean it just cut them.
It penetrated really well.
It's sharp, it's sharp out of the box.
It's out. It's sharp, it has strength to it.
It didn't, it didn't move. 70,000ths of solid steel. I would hunt with that.
Deer, pigs.
Yeah.
Medium sized game. Oh yeah, all day.
I probably wouldn't hunt with this one with the trad bow unless it was about a 55 pound bow with a three blade and those bigger blades. But it did perform pretty good. These two out completely. The leaf shaped one and the long bladed one with the bad feral and the bleeders.
Totally out of, out of all of these I would say it's a tie between these two.
Yeah, probably.
Out of the cheap Amazon broadheads, those are the winners.
Yeah.
Apparently cheap broadheads are worth messing with.
Some of them. Some of them, Some of them are just purely junk.
Now how do we get these out of these mdf?
We don't. These are pork ribs. So we're not going to let these go to waste. I can guarantee you that Everything we shoot, we eat.
I'm 100% sure that thing's dead now. It's been shot six times.
Thing is though, if that's the case, everything we shoot, we eat. We got to eat those things. And I can guarantee you we're going to need to marinate them for six or eight months because that ain't going to go down easy. Pork ribs, it's what's for dinner.
