Shrenik Shah - 'Sound of Silence Talks' Live at Bloom Foundation (June 12, 2022)

In this live interview hosted by K.V. Premraj of Bloom Foundation, cancer survivor and global speaker Shrenik Shah shares his 25‑year journey from a stage‑4 vocal‑cord cancer diagnosis in 1997 to becoming a sought‑after keynote speaker and life‑coach. Shah recounts the life‑threatening surgery that removed his larynx, the 1,660‑hour period he spent unable to speak, and his adoption of an electrolarynx that transformed his voice into a distinctive, robotic‑like sound. He explains the "7 C’s" (Courage, Confidence, Commitment, Connections, Communication, Conversion, Compassion) that guide his personal philosophy, and illustrates his resilience through anecdotes such as helping a pregnant thyroid‑cancer patient secure timely care. Shah emphasizes practical advice: trust medical professionals over internet searches, maintain flexibility like water, and eliminate a "complaint box" from one’s mindset. The conversation also touches on his extensive international business background, his upcoming documentary opportunity, and audience reactions praising his courage, flexibility, and no‑complaint approach. The session ends with a reminder of Bloom’s upcoming 100th episode and a call for further engagement.

Thank you, thank you.
The introduction that I gave about you was a very brief one. I would request you to talk more about yourself and your journey in life, so that the participants and whoever are there on Facebook will know more about you. The floor is yours, sir.
Thank you. Thank you so very much. प्रेमराजी पायल एवरीबडी Founder and the co-founders of Bloom Foundation. To be honest, I had a very precise reason to say yes to Payal for speaking on this Bloom Foundation or Bloom platform. The bloom is, I would say, it is close to my heart because, you know, it is just, just like flowers here, just like a tulip garden, or just like a garden or flowers we see all around the world, particularly in my zone, and so on. And before I start, I would like to shared something which is very important. You know, I'm having a privileged family's opportunities of delivering several talks globally, and each time, when be it in person or be it online, I feel like I am in Vrindavan and I am, I am greatly surrounded, blessed by Lord Krishna evidently. And that's how I can speak flawlessly, or I would say I'm humble to say I can speak flawlessly. Now, before I continue further, I would like to play a very short song and tribute to one of my beloved singers, and a song which is absolutely close to my heart. Just one second, please. So, remember, this is Life of success to life of significance, and that is life 2.0. Currently in my 25th year. When Payal sent me the options of various dates, 12th June, And some of the dates in July. I thought that, you know, the first date, that is today, 12th June, that cannot be a better opportunity of speaking at Bloom Foundation. And it is really not the case that I am pretty When I believe in time management, and for me, opportunities are larger. Opportunities are larger than attitude, and I don't believe. See, I am Gujarati, right? And I don't believe that single opportunity can form one. 100 new opportunities. And that's what I am doing for last more than 10 years as a speaker and so on. Let me ask one simple question. Today you are kind enough to host this event. And you know, you wanted to start with the introduction of Plum Foundation, talking about you, and somehow, God forbid me, but somehow, you know, your voice, you, you wanted things to talk about, and somehow your voice is not coming out, or rather, you are not able to vocalize whatever you want to talk about. Imagine, for instance, what will be the first impact— frustration, depression, anger, and so on. And that's the life I am living since 1997. Absolutely, from disabled to enabled, which is differently enabled listening voice. Another example I would like to share with you, and that is what you will see, or rather we have witnessed for years, when There are not one, two, one, two, but three examples being what is the models of being vocal. Joe Biden, Wei Bingtai, and you guys know better than me. And we have seen the benefit of being vocal from one another to parliament, from At the age of 44, I continued speaking with this electronic device, or I would say a handheld electronic device. What, what is the one of courage? You need to speak out in this world of countless intellectuals and doubters. Join with us like you and learn and friends worldwide. And today I'm with a fascinating, fabulous, incredible, originally those big In front of you all, competent individuals. So life is all about making you rise from zero to hundred, and that's how I am in this speaking arena, or I would say speaking stage. And look, I'm not a doctor, I'm not an engineer, but I built, I built bridges between faith, art, and God in the lives of countless number of people using this voice. And I thought being a businessman, being into international business for About this century, I realized what is the importance of being vocal and what is importance of touching the lives of countless number of people without, with, without any discrimination. And that's what my life is all about. For the level, I do share, you know, like how best we can change the life from nothing to a condom, a wonderful position or image building. I want to share one more example, please. Like the present situation, even two months old baby, you know traveling continents to continents and so on. And I by myself being the youngest member of my family, I mean of my parents. And believe me, I travel in train. For the very first time to Mumbai at the age of 20, 2020. Till that time, I had no opportunity of traveling even in train, unlike the present situation with too many young kids. And then, ever from the age of 35, till I was diagnosed with cancer, In 10 years' time, I've been to 37 countries, 200+ border crossings, and I was known by my European customers as a speed. The reason is in 30 years, I was boarding plane something like 7 times, 7 times. In 30 hours, I was boarding plane from one place or one country to the another country, and that's that's how I was traveling. And I know better what do you put it in what some time. And yes, money is after all money. You need to go and manage it during too many of my conversations, particularly with young generation. I tell them, see, usually people are saying that, okay, as you age up, you got to retire, you got to slow down. But I am doing other way around. The young generation, they, they have another 30, 40 years to work with and I guess I will be a model for another 10 years. And third one, I am going at a jet speed. Jet. I'm, I'm every day I'm doing something or the other. And I, you know, for me, I, I am into, I by myself into Formula Race 1. I don't compete with anybody. I compete with myself. Because there are two reasons. Number one, I don't have much of the time, like another three more tickets. That is number one. And number two, I want to grab everything possible out of this life because you know see this life now life two zero is just like a bonus life and I want to make everything possible out of this life two zero. देखिए मैं थोड़ा हिंदी में भी बात करूँगा। अगर आपके पास में TCS का शेयर है और TCS के शेयर में जब बोनस शेयर आता है ना, तो ओरिजिनल शेयर की जगह में बोनस और that is closer to your heart and that's what I believe, I evaluate and I implement out of my life and that's how I enjoy converting, or rather innovating life to zero, from nothing to whatever best I can. And you know, you know what, sir, that I am 360 degrees blessed by countless number of individuals. globally and, and that with this voice. So, so this is all about, you know, making difference, touching lives of many. And there are, uh, you know, you can see me from back to, you know, so, you know, I consider myself, I'm, I don't consider myself as I, I from India, I, M-A-L-L.
I am.
Where you can find being Indian innovation, intelligence, instinct, innovation, and everything. Rather, you know, if you're in a big shopping mall in Dubai or anywhere in the world, you know, it could be kind of a window shopping, and that's what you are able to see. Through my conversation, through my talk, and so on. And then I believe in 7 C's. 7 C's. And first is courage, second is confidence, third is commitment, fourth is connections, fifth is communication, sixth is conversion, and seventh is compassion. So my life is based on these 7 pillars, and that's what I enjoy leading quality life. And I, at the same time, I enjoy inspiring people worldwide. As I said earlier, I'm not a doctor, but I am being invited by premier medical colleges can always be built another institution for inspiring and motivating graduate, undergraduate students, and so on. So this is the life of success, a life of significance. Uh, you can look at my LinkedIn profile. The first line, I, I remember to say about the Invictus poem, like, I am, I am the captain of my ship and master of my fate. So, and for that, what you need is courage. You need to have freedom from fear because, you know, you, you could have so many things. You have strategies. You have so many other things, but unless without strategies, if you don't implement into action, strategies will remain either in your laptop or on your web or on a piece of paper. And then, you know, you cannot, you cannot accomplish any of your goals. And that's what Life is all about now coming to my journey. I was speaking normally like you all, and yet again, I'm, I'm having a wonderful privilege and honor on this Bloom Foundation. Being within first 100 as a speaker with this distinctly audible, unique voice. Now coming to my journey, so I, I was speaking normally like any human being, and then in 1st of August 1997, my voice changed from normal to the voiceless to whispering. And in the middle of August 1997, the condition was absolutely critical. Yeah, I was like at the bottom of swimming pool and I was unable to swim, so I was unable to breathe, and it was absolutely no chance Of survival, and then my physician doctor in Ahmedabad, he directed me to cancer surgeon Dr. Kothumbadil, a young man. He must be around 35, 37, I guess, and I saw him. I mean, together with my wife, and he said like, your devlog, Google got cancelled and we need to perform surgery. You really don't have much of the time because tumor was blocking my windpipe and that was causing a huge problem. So, nemraji, without Waiting for a minute or without opting for a second opinion, we said we don't mind. I don't mind going ahead with the surgery. Besides, you are going to lose the ability of speaking for lifetime as a no risk for me. Important is. Survival and nothing else. अगर जी गए तो आगे सब कुछ हो जाएगा। And that's how I underwent a massive surgery for nine and a half hours, and followed by radiotherapy for thirty, thirty, some thirty rounds of radiotherapy, and and for three months, for three months in a row, I was using pen and paper to communicate. 3 months, 90 days, 1,660 hours without speaking. Imagine, uh, if we have been told that, I mean, a work will pay you, say, ₹10,000 and you are not supposed to speak foreign, foreign for one day, you would say forget about it, I don't need 10,000, let me continue speaking. So for me, it was 1,660 hours without speaking. But fortunately, my surgeon, Dr. Kultum Madil, he suggested, hey, Shrenik bhai, don't worry, you can opt for this electrolarynx. And the most In modern part is when I started speaking first time with this electro learnings in public. People were running away. They were scared. They they they never understood. They never they would understand what is going on. Probably they have not never heard such kind of voice. They feel like a robot is speaking, and believe me, I am grateful to all those individuals because when they ran away, when they were scared, that was a turning point in my life. I decided that, Mom, I am Not supposed to give up. I'm not supposed to give up. And since then, I, I continued speaking and managed my business, everything, for another 13 years. And then since 2011, I realized the fact— actually, a doctor called me up and he said, like, a patient as a patient needs counseling and you mean that gonna be a better person than you and that's how I indulge into counseling, coaching and touching lives and fortunately I'm a person I could touch some something like fifty thousand lives till date and As I said earlier, I have delivered several TED Talks in India, abroad, and so on. And, uh, and let me share one more secret via this.
What's that? Can see a photograph.
Yeah, so it is yoga, but but it illustrates the flexibility flexibility in the life. Unless you are not flexible, you cannot accomplish. And believe me. In my life, I have never kept a complaint box. There is no complaint box at all. And when there is no complaint box, you are absolutely into 100% positive phase because you don't have to do anything. You, you need not have to analyze anything, just move on and You know, we all are familiar with the cricket. That is 2020. And imagine a cobra. I mean, imagine the fastest pace bowler cobra is bowling against you. You got helmet, pad, everything. And is committed to bowl you out in the first ball itself. It could be bouncer, it could be off-break, leg-break, spin, or whatever. Of course, Bumrah is not a spinner. And now when you are completely focused and when you see A bouncer is coming up. Now it is your intelligence, it is your expertise, and it is your eyesight, or rather your ability to be laser-focused, and when you can hook that bouncer. 106 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, you are a winner. And that's what we are committed to doing. That's what we have to do relentlessly. So that is, that is the effect. And yes, I, I forgot to mention earlier that I am now a bit Um, tobacco, never smoked. I'm non-alcoholic, strict vegetarian, and so on. But I got diagnosed with the cancer. But you know what, as I said, I don't have a complaint box. There is no regret. There is no regret in my life, which was on the contrary, on the contrary. I am grateful to the Almighty that you know that with this unique voice I could touch, and I'm committed to touch millions of lives through this voice. So this is this is my journey. I did I did I did I did published my biography and. You know what, don't read entire biography. You need not have to. Just read page 79 to 109. There are 20, 30 global recommendations from various walks of life, so-called specialists, and so on. And That can give you enough information inside of how to lead a quality life despite cancer. And SAG Cancer Care, the largest cancer treatment hospitals in India, they have awarded me with Life is larger than cancer. Life is larger than cancer. So this is what I am, I'm, I'm trying to illustrate to number of people, and that is, that is the important aspect. And this is, this itself is motivating me every single day. I believe, um, I could, uh, and you know, I mean, if I'm given a chance, let's make one another 3 more awards. My, my job is never-ending. So, and probably we might be running out of time, so I think this is all, uh, I must say. And one more thing here, again, I would like to mention That open file invited me for a talk. You know what? पूछना चाहिए मैं एक क्या बात है कि जब लक्ष्मी तिलक करने को आती है ना, तो मुंह तोड़ने को नहीं चाहते। For me, माँ स्वदेशवादी। आज जब मूल्यज्ञ से speaking is all about, माँ स्वदेशवादी। You are blessed. And march starts from Saraswati. March Saraswati.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for sharing that. Yours is a profile of courage and fortitude. Some of the things that you mentioned will remain with us. Like you said, connecting from the head to the heart to the gut, which was something very, very relevant to our lives. Then you mentioned about the three C's. It was endearing, and then in your life there is no complaint box. Couldn't have been more relevant. Thank you for sharing that. We are touched and we are honored to have you on our platform.
Premrajji, give me one more minute. I would like to add one thing here. I don't think anybody can clinically establish, but it is having everything to manipulate, but heart doesn't have ability to manipulate anything. And during all my talk, I use my heart and I don't feel used by it. Because, you know, I, I really don't need to manipulate. I'm a spontaneous speaker, and so therefore I did not have to remember like what I have talked last time or what I have talked before 15 minutes. So, uh, using art is always important because there you, you don't need to manipulate and you enjoy speaking like anything. Thank you.
Thank you. Thank you for sharing that. And before I go forward, I would like to mention on the 17th of July, Bloom will be celebrating its 100th episode, which is 100 continuous episodes. And if anyone is interested to connect with us, you're welcome. Now I request Abhijit Sanskari to take this show forward. Abhijit, are you— have you sorted out your technical issues?
Yeah, yes.
Okay, please take it forward.
Yes, yes, yes.
And then we can have our participants also ask questions.
Wonderful hearing from Shrenik Shah, sir. So I just loved all the insights which you had said, especially opportunities being larger than attitude, from disablement to enablement, life is all about making a difference, from nothing something, to everything, from the heart to the head to the gut. And the 7 Cs, all about confidence, courage, compassion, connections. I just am on some lighter questions. Post this, you would have touched and inspired many people. So what was the most satisfying moment which you had Post this when somebody you really made an impact and you you were really happy that yes you've done something which which was quite fulfilling.
Sure sir. In that case, I have one simple a very peculiar example. Uh, I was connected, or rather I was contacted by a lady with the thyroid cancer. At that time she was in 37 years, underwent thyroid surgery, and She was 24 weeks pregnant and she wanted appointment in Tata Memorial and she contacted me. I said, don't worry, I've been— I'm being loved by more than 500 cancer specialists worldwide and they have always supported my activities. And so on. I called up the doctor and he said, "Don't worry. Ask her to come to room number so and so tomorrow at nine thirty." And she was taken care of for timely follow-up and other things. Now you know what is important. See, I have done this kind of. For numerous number of patients in India, even in abroad. But for me, important was that small kid who was yet to born, 24 weeks pregnant lady. What could be her stage of mind? And that's how I could manage her appointment. She was, I mean, she was quite disturbed and so on because, you know, she had a fear of recurrent cancer. And so getting things managed, and as I said earlier, I am absolutely grateful to a number of oncologists for their seamless support. Same as about at any point of time. I don't think that could be a better award, better achievement, better accomplishment, better physical or, uh, digital award I received. Because, you know, this is, this is the fact is this is touching life of a human being and life Who is yet to come on this earth? So this is for me. This is the best experience ever.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, sir, for sharing this. So great to hear. And there's just one more question. What I would like to ask is that we see a lot of people getting. dejected, stressed, or maybe even contemplating depression or contemplating suicide over some minor worries or, or major issues. So what would be your key advice to them? Because somebody who seems a challenge from, from a much larger perspective, to see somebody just giving up For much smaller worries, is what would be your one key takeaway for them?
Absolutely. This is a very powerful question. See, if I talk about my own journey, I never used any kind of web browser for finding out Or studying, analyzing, evaluating about my cancer. Never. I mean, if something goes wrong, I straight away go to the doctor. Yes, web browsers are absolutely one way. Web browsers are an insightful media of information, but Web browsers are one and cannot be your doctor. If you are having any physical issue, mental issue, etc., whatever, go to doctor because, you know, he knows or she knows better. And let me tell you one more thing, each and every single doctor treating patients Or individuals, just like a newborn baby. They don't have any kind of discrimination. Believe in your doctors, believe in the treatment, believe in the treatment protocols, because you not know when— I mean, uh, if something goes wrong, you need, you need them. You don't know when— you need to go to the hospital. Web browsers are not going to support you in any way. And at times, at times, you know, just exploring some of, some of these stuff on web browsers, and if you are not medically or professionally qualified, don't use those resources for your own treatment or for the treatment of your relatives or friends. Because it's absolutely misleading, and treatment protocols are absolutely varying from person to person. You cannot apply thumb rule to each and every patient at any point of time. So you may try to avail the expertise of the doctors and not web browsers, and this can save your life.
Thank you. Thank you, sir. Great insightful words. We have a lot of our friends and well wishers on on this show, Brenda, Alka. So any questions any of you would like to ask? So you can unmute and and maybe ask. We can take 2 questions.
Can I?
Yeah.
So thank you so much, Abhijit, Premraj, and thank you so much, sir, for that wonderful presentation. And I think I'm more enamored by your— the courage of your journey, because I'm a doctor, practicing doctor, and I've seen people undergoing this surgery when the larynx is removed. First and foremost, when they hear that they have cancer, that itself kills them. The नाम से ही आधी तो जान पूरी, आधी क्या पूरी जान निकल जाती है। उसके बाद में जब वो सर्जरी के बारे में बताते हैं, when the ENT surgeon discloses to them or the oncologist discloses to them that you will be may not be able to talk later on, that is another very very painful experience. You know there are some people who lose their voice after stroke. and they regain their voice because they still have the larynx with them. They have to only do exercise with the, with the, with the speech therapist, and they regain their voice to a certain extent. But what you have undergone is like amazing because your full larynx has been removed, and after that to go for the training of voice, and for after that to train the whole world. What I understand is you are, I think, 24 or 25 years after the surgery. Am I right?
Yeah.
So that itself is very, very inspiring. And the two things that you told, I really liked. One is flexibility in life. Flexibility is such an important thing. It's like water, you know, wherever it goes, you know, water के सामने अगर कोई पत्थर आ गया, कोई बोल्स्टर आ गया, कोई माउंटेन आ गया, वो डरता नहीं है। He just goes around it, above it, below it, above it. And that flexibility, I think, is a very, very major thing in getting well after cancer or getting well after anything. And the second thing which I loved about your speech was the no complaint box. That is so important. And I'm telling everybody that from today onwards, I'm going to see to it that I'm going to become aware that before I open my mouth to complain about something, I'm going to remember Shrenik sir, and I'm going to not open my mouth and not complain. Thank you so much for that. And amazing and standing ovation to you, sir, for the work that you're doing. the message that you're spreading and for the encouragement that you're giving to the whole world, to the patients, to the unborn child, what you have brought. And you're doing it from a place of space inside your heart of service to mankind. So thank you so very much. I really bow down to you and I salute you for what you're doing, sir. Thank you very much.
Thank you, Dr. Alka. That was very nice.
Thank you, Alka. Thank you.
Anyone else?
Would like to have a word?
Yeah, I would like to mention about his resilience.
Yeah, Bina, go ahead.
Yeah, resilience is a very strong key factor which we can learn from him going through these different stages while having a medical treatment going on. To jump back again, to bounce back again, is a very important aspect for each one of us because life is not a bed of roses. So you always go down and up and down, but whenever something happens, you bounce back again. That is what we can learn from him because he's been through so many experiences, and standing this tall today teaches us a lot of resilience that he has in him. So thank you so much, Shanik sir, for letting us learn about it.
Gentlemen, if you permit me, I still like to add few things, and I would also like to share not one but three positives. You know, Dr. Benkajib, I am I'm truly touched. With what you said, and when you said about water, when you said about water, if I am given an option out of two, whether I would like to be a water or whether I would like to be alcohol, I would opt for water because you know once I opt for water. I can go all the way from Himalaya to the south. And if I choose to be alone, that means I know for sure that I am going to be mortal for 12 years in a brown bottle, and I don't see what is my future. Absolutely. Of course, 12 years down the line, maybe I saw I've been sold at some 5,000, 20,000. But, but at the same time, I have lost 12 precious years of my life. So I prefer not to be alcohol, but I prefer to be water. Now, quickly, I would like to share some 3 photos. This was this was the poster of twenty fifteen. There is a beautiful life even after cancer, and five years down the line, the beautiful life changed from beautiful.
Yes, that's very motivating. And today, today is 9047th, 9047th day as a planet. Cancer survivor. So 9,000 days being noted, that is from Sound of Silence to Shrenik Shah as a speaker, as an influencer, and it is a relentless search to touch millions of lives globally without any discrimination. So I'm, I'm, I'm grateful to you, all of you, to the great Almighty and so on. And yes, before I, before I forget, I am grateful to the caregivers of the world, each and every single caregivers of the world. Without their support Life of a patient, forget about disease, life of the patient is incomplete. So I salute, and by joining 2 hands, I bow down to all caregivers worldwide unconditionally.
Thank you, that was nice. Brenda, do you have a question?
No question, but Shrenik sir, I have been impressed by you even before. I think I, I visited your office in, uh, in, um, Bawai. I went up on the— I went and met the lady there. I also saw the, the classes that you run. And, uh, when I think of you, I remember 2 or 3 people. Um, you know, whenever I've seen them— Les Brown, you know, the famous Les Brown. So he had lost his voice and how he also reinvented himself. But he didn't have, you know, he wasn't in the situation in which you are, and yet you have gone so far to become an influencer. Of course, he's also an influencer, and now he is actually on his last few days. And even then, I mean, I find that inspiration every day he is speaking. even though he knows only he has a few days left. I, I remember also, um, Stephen Hawking, but he did not— although he, he succeeded so much as a scientist, he did not have— and he had a lot more encouragement— he did not have— he has not reached, I think, this level of acceptance which you have. And the third person whom I remember is Dilbert. Dilbert, the, the cartoonist. Very few people know that he, he has also had the same position and he doesn't have his voice, but his voice comes out through his cartoons still. But you have not, you have not taken the support of, you know, all those gadgets and, you know, like the cartoons which Bill Burr still comes, we still see them though he has no voice. But you have found your own voice in your own way. So it is very, uh, it's very inspiring. And that's why I came to Sound of Silence and my My intention was actually to— I, when I moved to Chandavilli, it was in fact I had come there to explore volunteering with you, but I only met, I think, the lady there. I forget her name. And somehow that did not happen because I, you know, I volunteered with Udaan, which is not very far from where you are. So yeah, I was, you know, I was impressed by the people. I got a good response when I called Sound of Silence, actually. which I didn't get from other NGOs, so I visited your office. So thank you for that, Cher.
Any— if we don't have any more questions, I think it's time to wind up. We have almost been talking for an hour. Once again, let us— let me remind you all, on the 17th of July is the 100th episode, 100th continuous episode of Blue. Please get in touch with us. We would be— we would love to hear from you.
