26 May 2023 · 8 min

The "front of the jersey" represents mission, community, values, team structure and mindset (what you play for); the "back of the jersey" represents the individual — name, number, skills and performance (how you will be remembered). The host outlines a progression—preparation → acceleration → contribution—arguing purpose is revealed through practice and service to a larger mission.

What can a jersey teach you about success and business and growth? In this podcast, I'm going to share with you on why it's important for you to play for the name that's on the front of the jersey and you be remembered for the name at the back of the jersey.
Hey there, Sidhs here. Welcome to yet another episode of the Freedom Business podcast. And if you have not subscribed to me on Apple, Spotify or any other place, make sure you subscribe so that you get more of this. This topic is all about sports. And I remember being a cricketer myself and I did a podcast like a few episodes before this on how cricket played such an important role in my business growth when, when I talk about everything right from being a team player, the magic of winning, the magic of losing, the magic of having a coach, and a bunch of other things. Now, as I was thinking more about that cricketing journey, I also remember that I used to wear these different shirts. You know, we had a sports jersey and of course we had the cricket dress, we had to wear whites, but we had our school team logo on the front and then we had our name and our number at the back of the jersey. So I just want to decode these two in this podcast and give you a perspective that you might have not thought about before. Because even in business it's the same applies. Okay? You have to play for the name on the front of the jersey and based on your performance, you will be remembered for the name written at the back of the jersey, which is your name.
So one of my mentors, Blair Singer, he says that don't aim to be the best.
Don'T aim to be the best, aim to be the best student of your topic. And the same happens even in sport. Some of the best sports personalities, they don't aim to be the best, they aim to be the best student of that sport.
Meaning they follow the process and they are playing the game not just to win themselves, but to get their team to win. And that's why sports is such an important factor for anyone if they want to be successful. And if you had some kind of an experience in sport, you'd be able to correlate that with your business. So let's talk about the front of the jersey. Usually we have the team name on the front of the jersey. So when it comes to business, I can correlate to four things. Number one is your mission.
Do you operate on a day to day basis where you're connecting it back to a higher purpose and higher mission and if it's not there, then that's what you got to think about. You got to define that on your jersey. Now the question is many people may be having is how do I find that mission? How do I know what is my purpose? Now, you can't just find your purpose like that. I was chatting with one of my mentors, and he says that purpose, to reach your purpose, you need. There are two more stages before that. First is you need to be passionate in whatever you're doing. Like, you need to love what you're doing. And then you turn that passion into a profession. And then as you're going through the profession, as you're actually in the game doing the stuff, then that. Then the purpose gets revealed. And that has been the journey for me. Like, I never knew that I would be doing what I'm doing right now, redefining our education system, creating so many teachers, leaders. I did not know that I would be doing this right now. So it started off with my passion in music, passion, media. And then I started and I went through the journey of the profession. I worked in the corporate world for eight years, grew my way up, way up the corporate ladder, learned a lot of skills, and then I set up my own agency. I can continue to implement those passionate ideas that I had and the skills that I'd built over the years into my profession. And I kept, you know, riding in that profession for many years. And then I found my purpose. So it's not that you find your purpose and then you make that into profession. Normally there is a preparation phase, okay. And then you have the acceleration phase, and the third phase is the contribution phase. So for me to find my mission, I had to go through that preparation phase and the acceleration phase to then find the contribution phase in which I'm in right now. And this is going to be for the rest of my life. So the front of the jersey, it has a lot to do with that mission. And again, you got to understand that the front of the jersey, whatever you're, you know, like, if you're. When I was playing for Bishop Cotton Boys School, that particular logo on my shirt, it was not representing just my mission. It was representing the collective mission of our school. Which leads me to the second point of the front of the jersey is your community.
Why are you doing this? Is it just for you or is it for some other, bigger purpose?
Yes. And so I was representing the school, representing the entire community of the. Of my entire school. So. And the school also was built on a set of values. So I had to follow those values.
So there cannot be a community if there are no values, if there's no code of honor, if there's nothing that's going to bind the community together. There's no, that's never going to be a community. It's going to disintegrate. And then the other thing that is, represents the front of the jersey is your specific team. So even though I was a part of the school and the logo on my shirt, on the jersey was my school logo, but I had to work with a team of 14, 15 of us, the cricket team. So but for a team to operate there has to be structure. So just like how you cannot have a community without values. You cannot work with a team if there is no structure. What do I mean by structure here? You know, we have the batsman, we have the bowlers, we have, each one of us are assigned and we know in which area we are specialized in and we work together as one unit, as one force to take the school, you know, through all the different matches to get to the finals and to win the tournaments. Right.
And the foundation of this entire front of the jersey is, is the mindset, the mindset of an, of the individual and the collective mindset of the team.
So that is the front of the jersey. Now let's come to the back of the jersey. Like I said, right? You'll be remembered for your performance.
Based on what was written on the back of the jersey. So your back of the jersey is your name.
And you have your number.
So how can I correlate this to business? In your business there are many people who start their business wanting their name to be on the front, which is good in the beginning phase because everything's today is about personal brand. But if you don't have a bigger mission and if you're only riding on your name, over time people will start to see through how pompous you are as a person and how you know, know you're just self righteous about every single thing. Okay? It's not about you, it's about them. It's not about you. So the back of the jersey represents who you are, it represents what are your characteristics. And you know, normally sports persons, they have a number at the back. So that could also mean your, your preferences, your strengths, your specific skills.
And what are the what, how you can be a valuable asset to the team. Okay, so all of that matters. And then the back of the jersey, to make the back of the jersey valuable, it's all about performance. And I've heard this before, you may be very talented, you may be having all the strength and skills, and let's say you put together a team of the most talented people and there is a chance that that team may also lose. If you only have star studded team and every single player, it is not about having just a lot of talent coming together in the team. It's also having the right combination of players that work together as a cohesive force.
I hope you're able to understand what I'm saying here. Yeah, it's not about individual superstars, it's about the collective force. And that's what I'm trying to do in my community building processes. Even though people, you know, they come from various different backgrounds, even though they might have different experiences from their past, but when they come into the Internet lifestyle hub community, I give them an environment where they are able to play with fellow members in the team so that they can win together as a team. And I started this whole team process right in the beginning of the journey when people started doing my hackathon. Okay, so the back of the jersey is your name, your number, your characteristics, your strength, your skills, and all of these connect to what's on the front of the jersey. So I just want to end this podcast by letting all of you know that.
When you are able to build a business where you have a connection to your higher purpose, higher mission, which is larger than you and larger than life, then when you start to play the game for the name on the front of the jersey, for the mission, community and the team and stuff like that, you will automatically be remembered based on your performance with the name that's on the back of the jersey. And it won't matter after a while, it'll become into a revolution and it will take its shape and form of its own. So I hope you found this podcast useful.
