In this interview, Spencer Tahil argues that the core error in go‑to‑market (GTM) outbound efforts is neglecting proper segmentation. He explains that without a clear segment, teams cannot focus, craft persona‑specific messaging, or align offers. He then outlines a logical, step‑by‑step readiness checklist for launching outbound campaigns: run a canary test, ensure CRM data flows correctly, lock down approved language, align segment inclusion/exclusion rules, enrich data, and verify technology integration before hitting “go”. Tahil also highlights a common technical misstep—sending from the primary domain—causing email service providers to flag messages as spam. He recommends using secondary domains and robust email infrastructure for high‑scale B2B outreach. Finally, he stresses that agencies often fail because clients don’t supply clear segment definitions, positioning, and offer mapping, leading to mismatched messaging and poor results. The discussion concludes with a diagnostic framework: understand who you’re targeting, why, and how the offer fits that persona before any outbound execution.

Because everything comes down to segmentation.
Yeah. How about on your side when you're building anything go-to-market related?
Honestly, usually the understanding of the segmentation first, because everything comes down to segmentation. And then from segmentation, you can draw awareness and attention. Without segmenting properly, you can't focus. And if you can't focus, then how can you talk to the personas? It's the biggest mistake in outbound. And on the other side, for outbound, When are you ready?
When do you know you're ready to launch the outbound campaign?
So outbound follows— it's logic. I'm really great at logic. So when we do outbound campaigns, what ends up happening is we have to do a canary test. In revenue operations, we make sure that the data gets pushed to the CRM properly. But then outbound, we don't ever want to launch something unless the language is consolidated and approved. So usually we know when the campaign is ready, when the segment is aligned, inclusion and exclusion rules are created, the data is already enriched, and of course the messaging and the persona is already approved. Aside from that, it's just a matter of making sure the technology lines up and we press go. Let's go.
Like you come in, you have a client who's already running outbound campaigns, but they tell tell you Spencer, my campaigns suck. I hit zero replies in three months. How do you tackle this?
Okay, so first thing that we look for, well that I look for is are you sending from the damn first and main domain? A lot of people send outbound campaigns and they have no idea that Google safeguards exist or that Microsoft safeguards. And when you send too much volume through these mailboxes, what ends up happening is that these ESPs think that you're spamming. So we look, are you actually using secondary domains? If you're doing like a high-scale outbound operation in B2B, everybody knows that you buy secondary domains, you buy like 100 of them, whatever, however many mailboxes you need.
Mm-hmm.
But also like not even looking at the infrastructure, just asking the question of where and what are you sending and how often are you doing it? Because if you're sending on the first main domain, that's a big mistake. If you are sending the wrong message to an undefined persona, this is a really big problem. And then it's just a matter of like, okay, have you done this before? Do you know what shit that you're getting yourself into? Because honestly, a lot of people don't know what the shit they're getting themselves into. And then they say, we're gonna hire an agency, and we're gonna say the agency's gonna wave a magic wand and be like, set up the infrastructure, write all the fucking copy, and then do all this stuff. But what they fail to do is they fail to supply the agency, or even their own marketers or their sales team, how to define the segment, and how to define the positioning, and how to define— to find the offer from that positioning. If you can't put the right offer and attention order together to the right persona, then this is the biggest thing that we can uncover in an audit. So I would really study the architecture first, the domain infrastructure, and then kind of like how it's all working together. I mean, the very first thing is like, what are you doing? Who are you doing it for? And why are you doing it?
What's the most overrated thing in GTM right now? I've got 2 words. Yeah. Cloud code. It's the most overrated thing in go-to-market right now. If you can't decide why If you don't have logic and you can't figure out like what the hell you're gonna say and who you're gonna say it to, like no amount of AI bullshit's gonna save you. That's like the biggest piece of trash shit that is in our market.
