Jimmy Winters: Everybody Thinks They Have a Good Idea

Jimmy Winters advises focusing on a single clear message and mission (his is mentoring and discipling at-risk youth), doing tangible activities (e.g., a food drive for 450 families) that people can rally around, and accepting that not all organizations will support you so you should move on and keep sharing your work.

Everybody thinks that they have a good idea or that they have a message or that they have a widget that they make that everybody's going to use, or that you're everybody's cup of tea. And what you got to real, what we realize is you just can't be all things to all people. Figure out whatever your message is. Ours is mentoring and disciple at risk youth. And so we're, you know, we could go work in sex trafficking. We could go do all these different things that really there's a lot of people that need help. But figure out what you're trying to do and develop a message around that and go do it a couple of times. I think the other thing that people don't realize is people rally around stories or people rally around experiences. So when we go to a business and say, hey, we just had a food drive and we fed 450 families and come out and do this and meet some of these families, we, you know, it's tangible, it's something they can touch. And so I think so many people are so busy trying to tell you how great their idea is or what they're trying to do. And there's value in that, but it's really kind of where the rubber meets the road. And I think that's where people make a big mistake, is they're so busy selling their idea that they're not applying it. And they've got to also realize and put their ego aside that there's going to be some companies and some churches that just have no interest in supporting you. And that's okay. That doesn't make them wrong and you right, that just means you have something different. So as the person, you've just got to move on. And that's what we've done. We don't hold it against somebody. Hey, you go do what you think you have to do for whatever you're trying to accomplish. We're just, we're not going to be partners here, and that's all right. And so many people want to just keep pushing and pushing and pushing. It's like, no move on, because there's too many people out there that are going to be attracted to what you're doing. And so it's just about hustling and getting out there and sharing your message, and then the idea itself and God are just going to bring the right people in. That's the way we look at it.
