SBIR grant vs contract

In this brief talk, Stacy L. Chin warns founders that confusing SBIR grants with SBIR contracts can cost them more than $2 million in non‑dilutive funding. She explains that a grant is based on the applicant’s own research idea, whereas a contract is issued when the government defines the problem to be solved. Because the vehicle determines how the application must be written, she urges founders to pause before investing time and to ask three critical questions: Who defined the problem? Who defines success? Who will buy or use the technology? Getting these basics right prevents losing substantial SBIR funding despite a strong proposal.
