In this solo motivational talk, Steve Lichtman explains why mastering the "clean no" is essential for protecting your time and growing your business. He reframes saying no as claiming the best seat in the house for your own priorities, describing how low‑fit clients, quick favors, and other energy‑sucking requests can fill your calendar and erode your empire. Lichtman shares concrete, polite phrasing for turning down opportunities—ranging from a simple "no" to a friendly, appreciative decline—while emphasizing that no apologies or lengthy explanations are needed. He extends the concept to firing clients, positioning it as a strategic business decision. The talk culminates in a practical challenge: identify one request that isn’t a fit, send a clean no, and feel the weight lift, reinforcing the idea that every rejected wrong thing is a "hell, yeah" for your own empire.

The art of the clean no. Protect your time like it's front row tickets. Hey, guys. Steve Lichtman. Unfiltered and unshakeable. And today we're gonna talk about the art of a clean no. And look, saying no used to drive me nuts. It used to totally twist me up inside and make me feel crazy. I felt like I was slamming a door in somebody's face. I felt like I was completely offending them and being rude and being a jerk. But the truth is, that's not the case at all. Now I feel like it's claiming the best seat in the house for my own priorities. Because sometimes we do have to say no. We have to say no in life, we have to say no in business. We have to fire clients. That's a real thing, firing clients. And it all starts with being able to say no. When something doesn't align with your own priorities and your own business and there's nothing wrong with it, and there's nothing to be ashamed about that business owners get bombarded constantly. Quick favors, low fit clients, people that are asking for just a coffee chat, and next thing you know, it drains hours away. So say yes to all that junk. And now suddenly, your calendar is completely packed with energy suckers like vampires of your life, leaving zero room for the stuff that actually is going to grow your business and help you long term. But hey, you're the hero to the people and you're helping everybody else but yourself. And I could tell you even from the days of running small agency work, how many times when people heard that you could do any kind of web development, they're like, oh, I just spoke to somebody the other day that was going to do my entire website and business plan for $200. If you can match it, I'll give you the work. Yeah, no, thank you. I mean, you know, sometimes you could say, no, thank you. You don't have to be as violent as just going no. 9. And it doesn't have to be that. You could. You could say, no, thank you. You could relax. Or you could also even say something a little more softer around the lines of, hey, I appreciate you reaching out, but that's not aligning with my focus right now. Wish you great luck in finding the perfect fit, though. So this way you're letting them know that you recognize that they're there. You're not ignoring them, but you're also letting them know, hey, this is something that I'm not interested in. I'm not going to be doing it, but I wish you luck in finding somebody to work with you. It's positive, it's kind, it's clear, and it's done. No apologies, no long explanations. You don't need them. Sometimes it's okay to just be like no and move on with your day. So the riff of the day is going to be this. Every no to the wrong thing is a hell, yeah to your own empire. Because when there's a whole bunch of bad stuff lined up in front of you and you don't say no to it, well, then your empire is crumbling. But if you're able to say no to all the wrong things in your life and in your business and say no to all the things that are slowing you down and keeping you back and holding you down, well, now you could say, hell, yeah to your own world. It's your own universe and make things better. So take a look in your inbox. Take a look at your DMs today. Spot 1 request that's not a fit, that you've been sitting there waiting now for a couple days. Maybe use Thanksgiving or your excuse. And now you're rolling it into the holidays and into Hanukkah. And then you're going to roll it into Christmas and Kwanzaa and every other holiday that is during this holiday season. You're gonna keep finding a reason. Then New Year's will hit, then Valentine's Day, then Groundhog Day, then, you know, Cinco de Metal. It doesn't matter what the holiday is. You're going to keep blowing it off. So I want you to find one request right now that's not a fit for you, and I want you to fire off that clean no. And feel that weight just lift off your body. Because you got to protect your stage time, man. Not every request deserves the encore performance from you. Not every request deserves the full production, the full show. Sometimes you just have to say no and kick it down the line. Have a great day, guys. Say no to somebody today.
