We talk about how environment has a huge impact on the way in which we perceive an environment or situation. Interior designers, restaurant planners, they know this. They will spend lots of money choosing very particular environments to set a stage for how they want their diners to feel. Meeting a friend for coffee, for example, you're more relaxed. You're generally you may sit at a cafe table and you may be to the side a little bit. Whereas if you go into meet with your boss and you sit face to face, you're immediately uncomfortable. You're on the defensive before the first word has ever even been uttered. Think about having that difficult conversation on neutral ground or somewhere that they're already comfortable. It can take the antagonism out of a conversation by making small choices. And as to the environment in which you want a difficult conversation to occur in.
