This is a YouTube video titled "Notes from the Field - Know Your People" containing a monologue or talk from January 8, 2024, focused on leadership and the importance of understanding what motivates team members by asking specific questions about their definitions of career advancement and family time.
One of the key tenets to effective leadership is really getting to know your people, understanding what drives them. But do we really know? And are we asking the right questions? When somebody says career advancement is the most important thing to me, do we all define career advancement the same way? Or my family time is the most important thing to me. Specifically, what does that mean? The next time you meet with one of your team members, ask them to specifically define it number one, to see if they can even do it. Do they understand what it means to them for that extra family time for that career development? And the second piece is asking them the questions to see what they need to do to get there. Getting to know your people means understanding their definition and their perspective of each of those areas important to them.
