A therapist explores what gambling actually does for you beyond the surface. It's not the real problem, he argues, but a solution to something else: pressure, boredom, numbness. Once you see the pattern and what it's solving, you can address the actual thing underneath.

The urge wants you to believe that gambling is the only thing that resolves the pressure, but the pressure often has a much simpler source. You just have to give yourself enough time to find it. So what was gambling doing for you? Just sit with that for a moment, because it was usually serving some kind of function, and that's the part that often gets missed. It wasn't just entertainment that got out of hand. For a lot of people, it was providing distraction, intensity, escape, or a temporary break from the pressure, even if they don't fully recognize it at the time. Urges usually have patterns behind them that can be addressed.
