Steve Tippins explains why professors work far more than their classroom hours suggest. Beyond teaching, they spend countless hours on preparation, grading, and research. Administrators who think faculty only work a few hours per week fundamentally misunderstand the job.
Very few people understand what a professor's job is, and the biggest problem is when you get a new dean from the real world who says, "These people only work 6 hours a week, 8 hours a week, 10 hours a week." They don't quite understand what goes into each hour of class time and what goes into research. But as long as you're having fun, go for it.
