So can you live on a Ph.D. stipend? Well, the first thing you want to look at— am I looking at $25,000 a year in New York City or San Francisco, or am I looking at $25,000 a year in Little Rock, Arkansas? And we all know $25,000 a year in New York or San Francisco or other major metropolitan areas in the U.S. isn't going to go as far as $25,000 in Little Rock is. So if I'm gonna go to a doctoral program in New York and I'm gonna get paid $25,000 a year and rent is, I don't know, $2,500 a month, you don't have to be a math major to understand $2,500 a month times 10 is $25,000. So 10 months of rent is more than my gross stipend for a whole year. So financially, the stipend may not support you in certain places.
