Turn a dissertation into a journal article by cutting the literature review and compressing everything else to fit the target journal's structure. Keep your core contribution, drop the rest.
Once I'm done, what is the best way to pivot this dissertation into a publication?
Your dissertation, assuming it's a traditional dissertation—5 chapters, 100-some pages—you need to compress it. You need to look at all of those articles that you read, hundreds of articles you read, and see, oh, well, they're set up like a dissertation.
They have an intro, they have a lit review, they have a methodology, they have results.
So just like a dissertation, but their lit review, where you spent 40 pages, they've got 5 pages. So they don't expand everything like you're asked to do in a dissertation. So it's compressing things in a way that will meet guidelines of whatever journal you're interested in. And do it relatively soon after your dissertation so it's still on your mind.
