Steve Tippins Ph.D. explains why PhD candidates lose credibility during defenses: they apologize for gaps in their work instead of defending their choices. Your committee leans forward during your defense. Why didn't you consider Y? What about X? Mind races. Did I miss something? Should I have included that? You start defending, explaining, and apologizing. Well, I thought about it, but I probably should have— No. Here's what happened. You misread the question. They weren't attacking the study. They were testing your scholarly maturity because brilliant candidates stumble all the time. They hear, why didn't you include X as a criticism? But it's not. It's an invitation to demonstrate that you understand the boundaries. And you made intentional choices. Your committee wants you to acknowledge the question without apologizing and explain your scope as a choice, not a limitation that you regret. That's an important consideration. Given my research purpose and my timeline, I focused on X because it directly addressed my central question. Exploring Y would be valuable for future research.
