Your dissertation chair can't do it all. Use your university writing center, talk to people who finished theirs, and find external resources that understand committee feedback. A free community is available if you comment "help".
Chapters
If you're reaching a point where your chair really isn't providing much guidance, then look outside of your chair. First, understand what your chair can do for you and has been doing for you. Now, what else do I need? Is there a writing center at my university that will help me with the writing? Am I looking for peers who've been through this? Am I looking for other outside support that is not only going to be supportive of me but also understands what I'm going through? Just having someone say, "Attaboy, Ralph, you can do it," is fine, but attaboys don't help you address comments and understand what your committee's looking for. And if you would like personalized support from me, drop the word "help" in the comments, and I'll send you the link for our free dissertation help community.
