A dissertation chair provides high-level guidance on ideas and strategy, not line-by-line editing, literature searches, or step-by-step instructions. If you're stuck on a deadline, that's a training gap in your program, not a personal failure. Being a great researcher doesn't make someone a good teacher.

This is what your chair is actually responsible for: guiding your ideas, helping you avoid major pitfalls, providing high-level feedback, keeping you aligned with expectations, and approving milestones. Your chair is not responsible for teaching you how to do research, teaching you how to find literature, editing your writing, explaining every comment, or giving you step-by-step instructions. When you're handed a deadline and you're told to figure it out and then you can't, it's easy to assume that it's a personal failure, but it's not. It's a system failure and a training gap. Your chair is a brilliant researcher. That doesn't automatically make them a great teacher of research. Comment "help" and we will send you the link to our free dissertation help community.
