Steve Tippins, Ph.D., argues that doctorate holders should use their title everywhere. His son once told him he wasn't "the right kind of doctor"—a moment that sparked Tippins to push back on the idea that PhDs belong only in academic settings.
Oh, you've earned a doctorate. Use it. I know people who have said, I've earned my doctorate. Now everybody's going to call me doctor, even my kids. I used to tell my son when he got hurt when he was little, I'd say, oh, I'm a doctor. Let me help. And he would turn to me and look at me with a stern face and say, you're not the right kind of doctor. You've earned it, though. Use it anywhere you want.
