Steve D Valentine explores how language shapes your ability to reach real estate and financial goals. He shares personal stories and strategies for committing to objectives and breaking through obstacles in the business.
All right, welcome back to the Real Estate Revolution. Hey, I'm Steve Valentine and I'm super excited you're here. Today, we're going to get into some word play and our goals and how you might be using the wrong words that are creating a little bit of a mental block when you're writing your goals or you're speaking your goals. So, I want to just talk about some of the things my wife been going through over the last year with some coaching that we've been doing. And changing some of the words that we use on a regular basis, I want to start with just some goals. And so, a lot of times, you know, we write things in a I want to drive a new car. I want to earn $100,000. I want... The piece that we're putting out there is that I want. That is the action that we're actually putting out there is that I want, right? Rather than I will. So I started writing my goals a little bit different. When I'm writing my income goals, I'm saying I will earn X amount of dollars. I will earn $5 million this year. And so I'm walking that through and I'm claiming it. And I'm also writing down, I can, I can earn $5 million this year. I will earn $5 million and I have earned $5 million. See what you're doing is you're writing in your will your desire and your actual getting to that goal and accomplishing that goal by writing, I can, I will, I have. And that was important to me as I've been writing every day, some of those things, a lot of people write their goals one at a time and now I'm kind of doing it from a standpoint of mentally I want to prepare for it, which is I can, I am capable of this goal. And then I want to claim it into existence. which is I will earn this because I'm willing and I'm committed to it. And I want to have it. I want to feel what that feels like to earn that money. So you're doing all these things to really get yourself into the mindset of what you're committed to. Now here's what I encourage you to do. Sometimes we're writing those things and they are big goals. They might not happen this year, they might be a five-year goal. But I can tell you as you're doing these things, they're gonna start to happen. and I loved it when I was looking through my phone, I'm wearing my Barrett Jackson t-shirt from 2024. We spent a little time, I'm a huge car lover. We spent a little time at Barrett Jackson this year. What's funny is I was doing this exercise, which I'm gonna share with you, which is a lot of fun. It's a picture exercise, but what was interesting is I was looking back through all the times I've been to Barrett, and you know what? There was a picture and there was a writing that went back five years ago when I took a picture of a gray blazer that looks exactly like the one that I currently drive now. And I wrote down it was a goal of mine and I was prepared for the opportunity when it came across. So when you write goals and you're really committed to it, you're gonna find where all of a sudden it's a target. It's something that I'm really working towards. It's something that I really want. It's something that I want to be prepared for when that opportunity comes up. So I'm just gonna use my blazer for instance, I took pictures of it, I dreamed about it, I wrote it down. And then there happened to be that year blazer next door to one of my rental properties that I knocked on that door a hundred times until the guy finally reached back out to me and said he would sell it to me. So it does happen as if you're focused on it. So a couple of steps there. One, take a picture of it, part of that vision board stuff which we've all seen. then write it down. Make it real, write it down, feel it, write about it, drive it. If it's a car, if it's a house, whatever, feel it out like you've obtained it. So I can have this car, I will have this car, I have this car, and think about all the feelings that it takes to get there. And is that something you're committed to? Is it something you really want or are you just dreaming? And that's okay to dream too. But if it's something you're really focused on, then really focus on and be prepared for those opportunities to arise. And if we take that into real estate, it's the same piece, which is, hey, I want to buy a rental property this year. I want to increase my net worth. So you're going to start writing those goals down and you're going to start practicing and you're going to start getting prepared for those opportunities to invest in real estate and build your wealth. But if it's not part of your goal this year, that's okay, too. It could be a five year goal. Maybe you're just getting into real estate and you're like, I just want to focus on knowing the business. And by the way, if I just got into real estate, that's what I would be doing. I'd be spending the first 12 months learning all the ins and outs of what I've got to do to know this business before I started doing the investment side. And so you're learning the investment, you're learning the traditional, you're learning how real estate operates and functions, which is going to make you better. And you're going to start writing goals as you see this business. Maybe you want to do 20 transactions, maybe you want to do 50, maybe you want to do 100 and you want to go really big. and I want you to go really big. My question is, are you committed to the work that it takes to get there? And it's a lot of work and I want you to do that and I want you to find all the places and the rocks that you can kick over that creates income because see in real estate, there's so many different opportunities to continue to claim these goals and claim your income and stay on track. And my point is, is like Find those goals that you are willing to commit to, work at them consistently and change your wording. Because if you change your wording, it'll change your mindset in those things. And some of the other words that have kind of changed, I'll leave you with this. My wife gets on me all the time, I have to go work out my legs. I do not like working out legs. I like working out everything else but my legs. So the days that I go, she always reminds me, you get to go work out your legs. You have two legs to work out. Your body physically works and you get to go do it. So take that blessing as you walk out the door. And sometimes I think we all need to hear that, that I get to, I get to go pick up my kids, I get to hang out with my kids, I get to hang out with my wife, I get to go to work, I get to sell real estate. We get to do this and it's pretty bad ass if you really love it and you get to do it and you see the blessing in what you do every day in this business. Sure, it's tough. It's been tough up and down, but I think anything that you love is going to have that. And you're going to have those roadblocks, you're going to have those obstacles, and you just learn to break through them or go around them. And that's what it comes down to. So just remember, you know, some of those word plays are really important in your mind as you're talking to yourself to remember that when you write your goals, I can, I will, I have. Guys, I hope you're doing awesome. I would love it if you would subscribe. comment and give me a five-star review on this podcast. If it's impacted your life, I love it if you would share it on your stories. Help me impact more people, especially in the real estate business. That's really my goal and my passion is to impact you because I think we're doing a better job in our industry and I'm just gonna keep doing this. So until next time, peace out guys.
