When Steve and I met in 1997, Octavia Butler and Samuel R. Delaney were there kind of giggling about it. They could see the sparks flying between us, and they were talking amongst themselves about us.

Yeah, I, you know, we'll talk about this when we actually do our soulmate workshop. But it took me a couple days to realize how attracted to Tananariva I was. I mean, I knew that I admired her. I knew that she was unusual and fascinating, but I didn't let myself kind of connect to that, oh, you know, attraction thing for a couple days. I was. Maybe I was the last to know.

We had a whole long weekend to fall in love, and that's what happened for us. So we're not. We're not saying that's what will happen for you, but we are offering a new course that we are very, very excited about. Why have love? Why not just play around? And the one thing that is true about all these people is that none of them grew up around loving, supportive, bonded relationships. If you ask them, you know, were you raised by a two parent family, both parents loving each other, and you, you know, did you have that next door? Do you have that across the street? Did you see that? And vastly disproportionate to the general population, the answer is no.

And, you know, there are some people unfortunately, who have experienced loss and feel like that perfect person is gone forever, or they've been through relationships and they really, really just do want to be by themselves. You know, empty house, only noises I hear, the ones I make. I'm not really talking about those people. We're talking about the people who never gave it a chance, who have never believed in it, who are cynical even at the idea that someone could be your soulmate.

What I would like very much for you to do is to ask yourself if you have those voices in your head, ask yourself where you got them. Where did you learn what it is you believe you know about relationships? Was it a painful breakup that you had? Was it watching your parents arguing? You know, maybe being raised by a single parent, you know, who never did create that kind of bond. Where did those beliefs come from? Have you ever sought out? I mean, what I like to look at is people who are grandparents and still in love. They've been married for more than 20 years, like we have, by the way, to raise a child and. And for that child to find a relationship and to have a baby.

Does a grandpuppy count?

Well, a grandpuppy doesn't count, exactly. Yes, we do have a grandpuppy. I love my grandpuppy because my grandpuppy keeps my daughter's heart alive. But if you ask yourself, and I think that all of us are descended from thousands of generations of people who found partners now, you know, in some cases, of course, it was simply a sexual relationship or political relationship or financial.

Arrangement or, you know, all those reasons.

But most of the time, I think most human beings are looking for friendship, passion, and love. You can take a look at love letters that people wrote each other as far back as we have history, as we have written history, that it's continuous with the animal kingdom. The urge to have a pair bond is wired into us because children thrive when they are in a protected nest, which requires more than one person to do that. You know, human beings, the traditional way was, you know, women taking care of what's inside the house, men taking care of what's outside the house. We are renegotiating that right now. We're in the 21st century.

Relationships look all kinds of ways.

They look all kinds of ways. And it isn't just men and women, but what it does, the thing that is constant, is that love is a valuable thing, an important thing. And what we're going to do in the workshop is to coach you through the steps that you need to fall in love with yourself, fall in Love with your life to be happy, even if no one else ever shows up.
