My name is Sian, and I get to draw every single day. I'm an illustrator from Sydney, Australia. Squarespace and I both believe in the value of being your own customer, and to me, that means making the stuff that you want to make and then finding your audience. One of my favorite parts about being an independent creative is how fast and how easy it is to go from having an idea, a random idea, and then creating something that exists in real life. Oh my God. Ready? Yes! Ease and speed is exactly what I need in a website building platform. Being creative for a living and running your own business can be super, super stressful. But when you take the umming and ahhing out of like what your customers wanna see from you, what your audience wants to see from you, because you have the same taste as them, things become a lot easier. When I was starting out, I looked around me and I couldn't see anyone making the work that I felt happiest making. And at that time, I thought that was because my work wasn't edgy enough, wasn't serious enough, wasn't good enough. But being dark and moody wasn't me. And contrary to what I thought at the time, Being serious about my craft doesn't mean that I can't use all of the colors. I very quickly realized that the kind of art that I enjoyed making the most was happy. To make happy art, you have to be in it 100%. So when I let go of what I thought I was supposed to be making and started making the stuff that I wanted to see in the world and the work that made me the happiest, people noticed and my audience found me. When I was just beginning, a friend said to me, you should try Squarespace. And I was like, okay. 4 years after my 2-week free trial ended, I'm still using Squarespace. Squarespace is what powers My blog, my online store, and my portfolio. The industry is changing. There are so few barriers preventing us from getting our work out there now. We're so fortunate to live in a time where sharing our work with someone is literally just a click away. There are even fewer barriers in terms of creating work and finding a place to make that work and finding an audience to see that work and building your own online space. There's no excuses for not being able to do all those things except for you don't wanna do them. We don't need Middlemen to show people, to connect with other people, to sell our work, to sell our products, to start a business, to create a website. Make the work that you want to see in the world and be your own customer. The end.
