Music isn't just background noise, it's a basic human need that should drive storytelling. The speaker argues for treating music as an active choice, not passive accompaniment, because emotional resonance through melody and sound conveys meaning just as powerfully as lyrics do.

Music and art is kind of a basic need. It's the things that make life good and enjoyable. I'm really passionate about, you know, taking music out of the background and making it less of a passive thing and making it the thing that people pay attention to. So I think storytelling in the music that I do goes beyond the literal narrative storytelling. So you have the lyrical component. Music is the most literal translation of narrative storytelling because you can actually tell the story with words. What I'm more interested in is using music to tell a story beyond the words, making music something that is consciously thought of instead of just passively absorbed. There's a moment when you know that you're on the right track, like you just feel it, and when you get there, you just keep going. When the thing fits, that's when you know. And I think that's what music is. It's the emotional content. It gives it its meaning.
