Sue Warnke talks about making videos in a basement with minimal gear and why keeping creative work simple matters. Blimey Cow started with almost nothing, and overthinking kills the work before it starts.

The thing we love about Squarespace is that it's so simple to set up a site. One of their core values aligns perfectly with one of ours: simplify. If there is one word that describes our YouTube channel Blammy Cow, it's simple. We are all about trying to simplify things. Whether we're breaking down a complex topic or shooting all of our videos in my brother's basement, we like to keep things simple. Simple is good. We make a living doing YouTube videos and all we have is a camera, a A couple of lights, this microphone, and brotherly love. I love you too, brother. But here's the thing. We grew up thinking that you needed expensive gear to make something cool. We thought that things needed to be complicated in order to make something good. We believed that if all we had was a little home video camera that our parents gave us as kids, we could never make good content because we didn't understand the complexities of video creation. What are you doing with that thing? I'm just trying to make a video. That is so sad. You are not nearly as cultured or intellectual as you should be in order to— just give this to me, okay? Leave this to the professionals. This is embarrassing. I'll give you a great example of this mindset. For years, we thought that the only way to have a nice professional-looking website was to code it yourself or pay someone a lot of money to do it for you. We struggled for years trying to make something we were proud of. Everything we tried was either hard to build, hard to maintain, or it just didn't do what we needed it to do. So eventually we, we just gave up. For a long time, we didn't even have a website. Page not found. Yeah, so we make videos online. Oh, that's cool. Do you have a website where I can go check them out? Why would you say that to me? Don't you understand? That's a sensitive topic. Very sensitive. Making a website is hard. Okay? Sorry. However, as we got older, we realized that we might not have Hollywood-grade gear, but we do have something that no one else does: our unique talents and passions. We didn't need to overcomplicate it. We just needed to make things that we loved making. And you know what? People started paying attention. In fact, the simpler we've made our content, the more people seem to resonate with it. So let's say you're watching this and you're worried that you don't have what it takes, or you're not smart enough, or whatever it is that's holding you back. Listen to what I'm about to say. If you have an idea and you're excited about it, you've got to go for it. Don't overthink it like we did. Don't get overwhelmed contemplating everything that it's gonna take to be a success. Just keep it simple. Take it one day at a time. I don't know where this comes from exactly, but we all have in our heads this idea that we're not good enough or smart enough. Oh, another beautiful day. Oh wait. I forgot. I'm a moron who will never amount to anything because I'm not good enough! Aw, man! But this world is made up of people who just wake up every day and figure out how to make things happen. We're all making it up as we go along, and the quicker you realize that, the better off you're gonna be. You, with the passions you were born with, are a lot better equipped than you think you are. See, if you're passionate about something, you're naturally gonna put the work in and do what it takes to succeed. Why? Because it's not work to you. Passion is playtime. Hey there, employee! Got some exciting news for you, pal. Instead of 8 hours, I need you to work 18 hours today! Haha, okay, thanks, buddy! Wow, I have so much to get done today to start my online business. I haven't slept in 36 hours, but I'm having a blast. This is why we love working with Squarespace, because Squarespace helps you explore your passions while giving you the tools you need to present them to the world. If I could give the kid version of myself one piece of advice, I would say just go for it. Don't feel like you're not good enough or that you're not smart enough. Just do it. Start simply and have fun. I mean, if you think about it, the things you love doing should come naturally. They should be simple. So simplify.
