My name is Michaela Cook. I go to college in Boone and I'm a social work major with a minor in psychology. Growing up, I was raised by a single mom and we were always really close. Last summer on August 5th, my mom had passed away the same day that I left for college. It's been rough having to adjust to her not being here anymore. My mom did have life insurance, but she had lost her job and lost all of her benefits to weeks before she passed away. When my mom passed away and I figured out that she didn't have life insurance, I paid for my mom's funeral with the savings that I had from high school. It's important to me to have a better future and to finish my degree because in my direct line of my family line, I'm the first one who will be graduating from college. And that's a really big deal to me. I am just excited to have a normal college life. My first year was Covid. My second year, my mom had passed away. And this year I'm just ready for normalcy. I just want to be able to have that college experience that I never got to have.
