Behind the scenes of creating Jacky, the swaddle transition jacket.

Cara Dumaplin shows how she designed and tested Jacky, a swaddle transition jacket made from soft modal fabric with a silent Velcro seal. She fits it on infants of different sizes and ages, checking arm length, hip mobility, and whether babies can roll safely. The one-size design works from eight weeks old over any sleepwear.

You are not going to believe what I just did. Imagine our swaddle and then the arms were like a puffer jacket. Can't be weighted, that's not safe. I don't know what I would do down here. A bag? Maybe it's just cut off. You see where I'm going? 4 and a half month old, he's in the 51st percentile, needs to be pushed up here. I don't think we'd want that down there. The length is good. Another inch would be here. We just don't want it to encroach on the hips, which it's not right now. These are a little long. We do want it to kind of stay— want to see her rolling. We definitely need that to come back here. 5 months old, she's in the 96th percentile for height. Really tall. Lucy, look how tall I am! And the 56th for weight. A little long on the sleeves. It did have to go a little bit to the back. If they do roll over, they have to be able to push up. Can you bend that arm? Okay, yes you can. There it is with the sleep sack. Look at your baby! Let's see, baby, this, this much shorter. Those hips still can move freely. The neck is good, the tag placement is fine, she can still push up and bend. It's really important that this stays around the wrist for safety. Well, it tastes really good. They just feel a little long. They don't come up here on the shoulder. Each sleeve's a little bigger. This one has the rib in it. This one does not. These probably need to be even tighter. 6 weeks, 12 pounds. There's enough Velcro to make it tight. Obviously the sleeves are too long for him and the cuffs are too big. Baby is 3 months. It's hard to get their little hands through here. See, she stuck her hand right through it. He looks so cute. What do you think? It's so good to see you. Thank you for being here. So this is Jackie, and it's a swaddle transition jacket. These arms gently muffle the startle reflex. He can still move his arms freely. It's made of modal fabric, so it's really soft, really great for sensitive sensitive skin. This has the silent seal, so there's no loud Velcro. It's one size fits all, can be used as young as like 8 weeks. It can go over a onesie or pajamas or a diaper or a sleep bag. Do you like it? If we lay him down and he rolls to his tummy, it's still safe because he can bend his arms and push up.
