Day in the Life: Starting Daycare

Chelsea and Jeremy document their routine with five-month-old Jackson as he starts daycare, showing the reality of feeding, sleep schedules, and drop-off mornings.
You.
Day care parents, today's day in the life is for you. And even if your baby doesn't go to daycare, you're gonna love this one. Today we get to spend the day with Chelsea and Jeremy and their five month old baby Jackson. For the first four months, mom was home with him and he exclusively breastfed and then started daycare. And although he was a great sleeper, there's been some struggle. It's part of life, right? The baby starts daycare. Mom wasn't sure exactly how much milk to be sending in because she was exclusively breastfeeding and now became a pumping mom. And lots of communication happening between parents and daycare workers, which is amazing. But you're going to see some of the struggle. And I love this day in the life because it's so real and I think so many of you are will be able to connect with it.
Good morning. It is 4:53. My husband's alarm just went off so he's gonna get up and get ready for work soon. So I will typically get up around this time and if Jackson's awake, feed him. But we did a dream feed last night. So I'm going to get up and pump and then I will do my workout before he hopefully gets up around 6 or 6:30. So I'm gonna go pump now. So I didn't quite get to finish pumping. Jackson woke up. We've been dealing with some early morning wakings for about a month so we're trying to figure out best course of action. So we've done wake up at 4 and try and feed him. So I went in to feed him and it turns out that we had a first. He has been rolling since he turned five months a week ago, but he's never rolled over onto his tummy while he was asleep. So I think that. So change of plans. He rolled onto his tummy again and woke himself up and does not want to go back to sleep. So we changed him, took off his sleep sack and I'm gonna put him on his playmat and get my workout done hopefully. So our morning isn't quite going as plan. I tried putting him down to start my workout on his activity mat and he is not a fan this morning. Got him set up, got my workout started. So here we go little man. Let me get through my whole workout. Yeah, a little fussy at times but distract him with some hanging toys and he did good. Now it's time to get ready for work. So while I'm getting ready for work I have the water heating up for the shower. But little man sits in his chair right there. That way I can keep an eye on him. And then if I need to go into the closet. So I am almost done getting ready. My hair is done, I'm dressed. I just need to finish my makeup. But I brought Jackson into his room so we can get him changed and dressed. And then once we're both ready, we'll be on our way. And boy, are you ready to go daycare. You want to go daycare? Yeah. You love your daycare, huh? Yeah. Let's get ready to go. So it is 7:27 and he is buckled into his car seat. We're about to leave for daycare and he has fallen asleep. So we are at daycare. I am going to unload him and drop him off and leave his milk and then we'll be on my way to work. Jackson is in his classroom. I usually give a pass down of what time he woke up that morning last time he ate and then give him his milk. And I say I love you and daddy will see you in a couple hours because dad usually does pick up.
Okay, who wants to hug Chelsea with me? It's not even 8am can you just see like, oh my gosh, what a rough morning, right? This is a baby who used to sleep 7pm to 7am started daycare, had some hurdles. Keep watching. And don't you just love Chelsea's attitude? She's just going with it. That first nap, 10 minutes in the car. Please keep watching because what you're gonna find is he's gonna do fine. Let's just keep going throughout the day. Chelsea, we love your attitude.
You go, mama. So it's currently 10:30. This is the first chance I've had to have someone cover the business area where I'm working right now. But I'm going to pump. It's usually 15, 20 minutes and then I go right. So I'm all done pumping. Milk is stored in my little insulated bag. While I'm pumping, I'll have a snack, drink some water. This has some lemonade added to it. I'm just gonna go clean up and wash my pump parts and then go back to work. So I have finished my lunch. I still have about 20, 25 minutes left before I have to go back to work. So I am starting pumping session number two. I'm about to do pumping session number three. It's about two and a half hours from when I pumped last, but it works out for when I go home and time to feed Jackson for bed. It's right around three hours, some a little bit shorter, longer. But until tomorrow, my friend, Mama's got to go back to work for the next hour or so.
Hi everybody. Dad checking in, Just getting off work and haven't seen a little one all day. So we're gonna go pick him up from daycare and see how he did. Hopefully he had a good day. So just got out from daycare, unpacked and unloaded, passed down from daycare was he did well today. Had his last bottle around 2ish. I can't see the time. Okay, so it's been about an hour and a half. Okay, well, little man's getting a little fussy. Starting to show, I guess some of those sleepy cues. And so it's been about two hours according to. According to Dick. So we're gonna walk him into his room and do a quick little routine which is change him sound machine, humidifier, and then sleep sack and bedtime for a quick nap before mom gets home.
Ready?
Yeah. Side boy. Okay, little man is asleep. Gonna put him down for about an hour so we can keep him up in, in the afternoon before I put him down for good tonight. So while he's sleeping and mom is away, I will find a chore to do which today seems to be dishes. So yeah, just check the little man on the cam. And he's up. He rolled over to his tummy. Hasn't quite got that one done yet. So we're gonna try and coax him back over and get him back to sleep. Well, fishing and successful. It's okay. It's about towards three hour window to eat, so we'll give him a bottle right before mom gets home and she'll be home in about 30ish minutes. Hello, Chucky. Chuck, we're outside. Guess who's home. Guess who's home.
Mama's home. Hi boys.
Hi mamas. Yeah, they're big babies.
Got my little sous chef in the kitchen. He's hanging out in his chair. I have my crock pot espresso and we are doing instant pot chicken fried rice for dinner. So Jackson's getting his last nursing session in before we do the rest of bedtime. So once he's done, we will read a book and put him in his sleep sack and then put him down.
All right. My arms held you so tiny and free Cuddling you from your head to your feet I knew I would love you forever One sunny day.
So we finished watching Thursday night football games and now we are cleaning up the kitchen, doing dishes. It is 7:06 and I just turned off his sound machine. So let's go in and wake up little man. Good morning, Jackie Jacks. Good morning. Good morning.
Hello.
Hi handsome. Good morning. Taking care of babies. So it's been about two weeks since since we filmed our original day in the life and I'm just here to give an update about Jackson. So I still get up around 5 and pump and then do my workout, which is why I'm up right now. But with Jackson having his early morning wakings, we decided to go through the ABCs of sleep and also use our phone consult with a team member of taking care of babies. And we came up with a customized plan to help Jackson get back on track. So using the tips and the phone consult, we were able to get Jackson to go to about 11 hours of sleep a night. So he usually goes down around 7:15, 7:30 and will sleep until about 6:30. So that is amazing compared to his early morning wakings that we were struggling with. Jeremy already left for work, but I know I can speak for both of us when I say thank you, Kara. And thank you to the taking care of babies team for the newborn class, the three to four month bundle and for the ABCs of sleep because it's definitely worked. And also thank you to all of you for following along in our day in life. Have a great day.
Sam.
