DIL: Baby After Infertility

Cara Dumaplin shares a day caring for her infant son Rory after years of infertility and IVF. She walks through feeding, sleep routines, and managing his reflux, documenting the reality of early parenthood after a long journey to get here.
Take you through our day in the life and sprinkle in some information about our infertility story and how we got our little miracle baby. We do with working part time and taking care of a 17 week old. Oh, good smiles. Good morning. Hi. Oh, this bottle. Now mom's having her bottle coffee. We prop him up for a little bit and he will have burp rags and bibs around him all day. And that is because we have a reflux baby who has terrible reflux. And we are on enfamil ar formula because we have a stick spit upper. Yep, we do. We do. I will never be able to have kids without some sort of reproductive health. So we were trying to get pregnant. We couldn't. IVF was my only option. Well, we didn't know that at first. I started with three IUIs, which is inner uterine insemination. Then I moved to IVF. Our first IV cycle ended in our little baby making it to heaven. He's not earthside with us, but our second IVF cycle led to. It was a long road, a long journey. When I started, I was 26. I'm now 28. My husband's the same age and it took a very long time to get our. Letting you know that I feel you. I'm with you. It is such a hard disease and there is hope because I had a pretty sad diagnosis. And we have my little miracle baby. We get tired of being on our tummy. We play our piano and we look at ourselves in the mirror. Before our first nap, I got him changed into his outfit for the day. But I wanted to show you a little mom hack that I've learned. I put the diaper I'm changing under the diaper that I'm taking off. It makes for really easy diaper changes. And if my mom, you know that things spray around and it gets everywhere. So if you can just whoop it on there real quick, then it makes your life a lot easier. And less clothing changes because it doesn't get on the clothing. It's getting fussy. And is ready for their first nap. He has been awake for 95 minutes and he's ready for bed. So we're gonna do our first nap of the day in his bed. We have nothing in the bed, just him and his pacifier. Safe sleep here. And oh, your paci fell out. I'll put his paci back in and then he's gonna go take a nap. So have room darkening shades. And then we also have a blackout curtain behind it. We add all those things Turn off the light. And then he's ready for his nap. These pajamas are just not gonna stay in them all day. Now that he's down for his first nap, I'm gonna get ready for the day and then we'll keep going with our day ready. And now I'm gonna go in and wake him up. It's 10:35 and he should be eating his bottle around right now. And he hasn't woke up yet, so I am going to go in and wake him up. How was your nap? Hi. How was your in law is here. I have to go run some errands and she's here from out of town, so she is going to watch him while I'm gone for like an hour and a half and she's gonna update us. Oh, oh, nice burp.
Ready for a little nappy? Yes, I do. I think you're ready, honey. I think you're ready. It's okay, Grandma. Got you. Put your arm in the Merlin you.
Saw in the last time he went down for his nap. The thing we struggle with Rory is he doesn't let us know when he's tired or hungry. He doesn't fuss a lot or cry a lot. So we just kind of have to guess when to put him down. And sometimes when we put him down and he's obviously a little bit too tired, we have to recover from being a little bit overtired. So something we're working on knowing his cues a little bit better because he doesn't show them to us very well. He doesn't want a nap. They've only been down for 30 minutes. So we are going to go to lunch with grandma and we're gonna try and sleep in our car seat for a little bit. Little stinker is not napping, so we'll just adjust his wake time for the next one. Normally he would have napped until now. 1:30. We would have woken him up to have his bottle, but Mr. Decided to wake up 30 minutes early. So we will just adjust his awake time and put him down for his nap earlier. 4:30, he's actually still asleep, so now I'm gonna have to wake him up so he can eat his bottle. How was your nap? How was your nap? Was it good time? Playtime with Daddy includes multitasking on the peloton. Go, Rory, go. Go, Rory, go. The hardest time of the day for us. Rory's gonna go down for his last nap. It's his cat nap. And it's gonna be like for 20 minutes if that. Because then he has to wake up and have enough awake time before bedtime at 7:30 for his last nap. Today. I'm gonna take this time to kind of talk a little bit about infertility and what my husband and I went through. So I have this entire bag full of 200 plus injections right here. This entire bag is full of injections. And that's what it took to get to my son Rory. It was a really, really hard road. We had three IUIs that failed. Two cycles of IVF and our second cycle finally worked, and 225 injections. I mean, we drove probably. We were probably in the car for thousands and thousands of miles. And it was just a really long road. But I'm here to share my story with you because it means that miracles do happen. And don't give up. Keep trying. Because if you keep trying, you can end up with your miracle baby too. 20 minutes. I feel bad I have to go wake him up. But if I don't wake him up, he won't sleep tonight. So I'm gonna go wake him up. Hello, mister. Hi. We gotta wake up. We crushed the last awake window. He didn't lose his marbles. Now we're getting ready for our bedtime routine, which is bath, book, bottle, bed. So we're getting ready for our bath. I'm gonna pour in the bubble. We use this little guy right here to drop in the water. And it will tell you if the temperature is okay. So if it flashes blue, it's too cold, and red it's too hot. While having our bottle before bed. I love you. He'll be asleep until 7:30 in the morning. He normally sleeps 12 hours in the night. I don't have to do a night feed anymore or anything. So he's sleeping for the night. And that's all I have. So thank you guys for watching and any of my sisters going through infertility. I'm here for you. I feel you. I'm praying for you. And I just want you to know that miracles happen every day and that your miracle will happen sometime. So I'm here if anyone needs me. And I'm so glad you got to follow along with the day. In the life of myself and Rory, we have gone down to three naps a day instead of four. We dropped one, and we're doing three naps. And our awake windows are now two hours. And our last awake window, no crying, no anything. And I really attribute that to Kara and taking her class and laying such a good sleep foundation. So we haven't had any regressions yet. Knock on wood. But he's doing. Really. But, yeah, he's doing great. He's growing like a weed. And we are so thankful for Cara and her classes. And we plan on doing the ABCs of sleep when he's old enough. So everything's going great. And he's growing and doing great with his sleep.
