This is a YouTube video titled "Have you heard of the 'newborn curl'? #safesleep" created in November 2024. The content features a dialogue between two speakers discussing the newborn curl phenomenon in infants, explaining its causes and implications for safe sleep practices. The speakers clarify common parental concerns about babies rolling over and swaddling safety.
Have you ever seen a brand new baby do this?
Curl up and roll to their side.
Parents often wonder if this means their baby is about to roll over.
They worry it's unsafe for sleep because we're always taught back is best.
Let me set your mind at ease. This is not a sign of rolling. This is the newborn curl.
Here's why we see it. In the last couple months of pregnancy, a baby's muscles begin to strengthen and curl into that fetal position. This gives them that nice tight flexion you see in a full term newborn. But sometimes when we lay them down on a flat surface, those muscles contract and it can cause them to curl onto their side. Yes, the newborn curl. Now, in order to roll over to their tummy and thus need to come out of the swaddle, those trunk and core muscles will need to strengthen greatly, which we typically won't see for a few months.
But what does this newborn curl mean for sleep? Be sure to read below.
