Help- my baby won't take a pacifier!

A guide to helping your baby accept a pacifier, with techniques and demonstrations of what works. The video shows how to read your baby's reactions and adjust your approach.
Want to take a pacifier? She's a baby that doesn't like it. So we're going to wait until she's calm. If she's screaming, we're not going to try to offer her the pacifier. Right. So first thing we're going to do is just put firm pressure around her mouth like this. Okay. Do you see how she's kind of opening now? If I put it right here on the tip of her tongue, the thing to do is she's going to thrust it. So I'm going to apply firm pressure and put it to the middle. And then I'm just going to kind of go in circles around. She's kind of biting it. She's acting like, I don't know about this. She's not really wanting to suck it. I'm gonna go in and out and around and see how she's kind of acting like, I don't know. I don't really like it. And sometimes see how her little arms are kind of flailing around. Sometimes it's best to try when she's swaddled. So let's try this. So we have it in there. We're just gonna apply firm pressure on the tongue. Up and down. Go in circles. Nice, baby. Nice. Okay, so now she's kind of. But not really sucking yet. There you go. Does that feel funny? So with this, the reason we would want to use it is because it can be used for when she's. She wants to. Like if she's fussy. Yeah. Oh, there you go. Let's try again. So sometimes they gag. Does she gag? Yeah, like she's expecting food. Food. And then she gets. And then she gets the plastic. She gag. So if she gags, we can just apply firm pressure, pull it out just slightly, but she's. There you go. Okay, now we're gonna go around in circles on it. We'll just give her some time. You can see she's not loving it, but we can see, like, okay, let's see if she'll take it again. We're not trying this when she's screaming and she's upset. And also you can dip it in breast milk or formula. Put some gripe water. It makes it a little bit sweeter. Put some of that on there. Let's see how she does. There you go. So she's starting to take it. Not great. There you go. But just take some work. Yeah, just take some work. And she may not, but there you go. Good job, Madden. We're just gonna go in and out and up and down and see if we can't get her to thinking about it. She's trying. There you go. She tends to fight a lot of things.
