Brief transcript of a YouTube video documenting parents moving their five-month-old son, Colin, into his own bedroom. The speakers describe following guidance from a baby-care course to create a safe, comfortable nursery (plain crib, no loose bedding or toys, anchored furniture, blackout curtains, sound machine, secured cords) to encourage independent sleep and routines.
Come with me to move Colin into his own bedroom. We've been learning through our Taking Care of babies program that there are a lot of benefits to babies sleeping in their own room once they're ready. And Colin's five months old now, so he's starting to be able to recognize routines and environments. So we wanted to make a safe, comfortable, relaxing environment for him to do our bedtime routine, and that'll help foster independent sleep.
It's been a couple years since we set up a nursery, so we were happy to reference this cheat sheet that came with the course as well. We checked off most of the boxes just by having a plain crib. No stuffies, no blankets, no pillows, anything like that. But we also anchored all of our furniture to the wall.
Installed blackout curtains, set up our sound machine, and made that any cords that were hanging down were securely fastened to the wall. Once we were done, it looked like this. And I think that this is just a perfect, comfortable environment for Colin to learn that this is where he falls asleep securely, safely, and independently.
